    Job Description

    Virginia International University is seeking PART-TIME ESL INSTRUCTORS to teach in our School of Language Studies.  We offer both INTENSIVE and/or NON-INTENSIVE ESL prgorams (see our programs here: https://www.viu.edu/sls/programs).  Our programs have several start dates throughout the year.  WE HAVE AN IMMEDIATE NEED FOR ESL INSTRUCTORS WHO CAN TEACH WEEKDAY MORNINGS & AFTERNOONS.

    PROGRAMS & HOURS:

    ** NOTE: OUR PRIMARY NEED IS FOR INSTRUCTORS WHO CAN TEACH WEEKDAY MORNINGS & AFTERNOONS.

    INTENSIVE ESL PROGRAM (7-WEEK CLASSES, 70 CONTACT HOURS OR 35 CONTACT HOURS) Typically college-bound international students

    • 70-CONTACT HOUR COURSES MEET FOUR (4) DAYS PER WEEK
    • 35-CONTACT HOUR COURSES MEET TWO (2) DAYS PER WEEK
        
    

    NON-INTENSIVE ESL PROGRAM (DAYS/TIMES VARY BY CLASS TYPE; SEE WEBSITE FOR UPCOMING START DATES) Typically short-term students working on their English (includes Au Pairs, local working adults, etc.)

    • MUSEUM CLASSES MEET ON SATURDAYS
    • EVENING CLASSES MEET TWO (2) DAYS PER WEEK
    • DAYTIME CLASSES MEET FOUR (4) DAYS PER WEEK
    • WEEKEND CLASSES MEET FOR TWO (2) CONSECUTIVE SATURDAYS

    WHAT YOU'LL DO:

    • Teach courses in our intensive ESL program, primarily for college-bound international students, and/or our non-intensive program, primarily for au pairs and local, part-time students
    • Part-time faculty can teach up to 27 hours per week
    • Instruct students in pronunciation, speaking and listening, grammar, reading and writing, and content-based electives at all levels of English language proficiency
    • Use current, student-centered teaching methods and integrate technology appropriately to further learning
    • Participate in professional development training, mandatory meetings, and complete administrative tasks, as required
    • Evaluate and select text and instructional materials
    • Develop and manage the class syllabus that includes course objectives and learning outcomes, teaching methodology, and attendance policies in line with those of the School
    • Plan and create lectures, in-class discussions, and assignments
    • Deliver course content using a variety of teaching styles and provide interesting and engaging assignments that demonstrate the real-world applications of concepts covered
    • Grade assigned papers, quizzes, and exams and assess grades for students based on participation, performance in class, assignments, and exams
    • Use the University’s learning management system (Canvas) to post syllabus, assignments, and other materials and to communicate with students
    • Stay updated on innovations and changes within field of expertise
    • Teach online courses, as needed
    • Provide quality education and service to diverse student body to meet the objectives of programs of study and prepare students to effectively participate in the global community and workforce
    • Support relevant university initiatives
  • Qualifications

    Qualifications

    WHAT YOU NEED:

    Education:

    • Master’s Degree in TESOL, Applied Linguistics, or closely related field from an accredited university (minimum requirement for intensive)
    • Master’s Degree (in any field) from an accredited university + TESOL Certificate (minimum requirement for intensive); or
    • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university + TESOL Certificate (minimum requirement for non-intensive)

    Experience:

    • 3+ years teaching ESL to adult learners, in a college or university environment
    • Experience teaching online and developing courses (a plus!)
    • Experience with learning management systems (Canvas, Moodle, Blackboard, etc.)

    Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

    • Ability to work with a highly diverse staff, faculty, and student body
    • Ability to respond to the needs of learners from a variety of educational backgrounds in a multicultural environment
    • Excellent oral and written English communication skills (successful candidates should have native or near-native level English proficiency)
    • Excellent organization and time management skills
    • Demonstrated effectiveness in teaching students using student-centered, communicative, and engaging activities
    • Ability to show confidence teaching and presenting to a class
    • Ability to manage classes of students with a range of language abilities
    • Ability to design and build online academic courses
    • Understanding of the mechanics of online learning and effective teaching styles
