Great Opportunity & Experience for those 18 years or older Located in Wayne State Universitys Center for Urban Studies. The AMUS collaborates with local non-profits, businesses, police departments, and residents to achieve a reduction in crime by improving levels of neighborhood guardianship, reducing victim attractiveness and susceptibility, use of technology for crime mapping and analysis, as well as increasing neighborhood communication on matters of public safety. AMUS volunteers work with neighborhood residents to create block clubs, start citizen patrols, board up vacant properties, clear safe pathways for students who walk to school, implement crime prevention strategies and more. Members also network and build coalitions with community organizations including: community development corporations, schools, church groups, and police precincts. Our targeted neighborhoods include: Midtown/North End; Bagley-University District; Cody-Gompers; Jefferson East; Morningside-East English Village-Cornerstone; Osborn-Denby; and Southwest Detroit. Program Requirements: Applicants must be 18 years of age. Regular and reliable access to a car is recommended. Fluency in Spanish and Arabic is helpful, but not required. Candidates should have some experience with community organizing, conflict resolution, leadership skills, public speaking and general computer competency. Background check is required and community organizers must be willing to work outside. Benefits include nonprofit experience, a bi-weekly stipend, health coverage, child care assistance if eligible, training, and an education award upon completion of service. Service is for a one-year term, with possible option to renew for one additional year if program funding is continued.
