    THE WELLNESS CENTER:

    Westminster College is a small and close-knit community which allows us to attend to all students’ mental, physical, and emotional needs while they are away from home. The Wellness Center is compromised of The Student Health Clinic, Counseling Services, Nutrition Services, and Wellness Programming and is staffed by caring health professionals who provide individual consultations for personal, social, family, academic, and health concerns. Given this holistic perspective, students are able to receive specialized and tailored services that meet their specific needs in one office. Some of the unique services that we offer to student at no additional cost include: individual, group, and couples counseling, one-on-one consults with a registered dietitian, BASICS (an alcohol reduction program), and walk-in appointments to see a nurse practitioner to service all health needs.

The Wellness Center actively engages in promoting the development of healthy lifestyles, psychological functioning, leadership in a global community, and acquisition of problem-solving and decision-making skills. The Wellness Center serves as an educational resource to the students, faculty, staff, parents, alumni, and board of trustees in the Westminster College community.

    POSITION SUMMARY:

    Under the direct supervision of the Executive Director of the Wellness Center and the Assistant Director of Counseling Services, the Counselor (part-time) will provide direct mental health services to students and assist with prevention outreach events on campus. This position is a 9-month position and serves as a vital role in maintaining a healthy campus climate by providing services that directly impact students’ academic engagement and retention. Additionally, this position is responsible for assisting in developing and providing outreach programs to the campus that address healthy behaviors that may impact student success and wellness.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    The statements below are intended to describe the principal duties of the person or persons assigned to this job. They are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all job duties and responsibilities.

    Provide individual counseling to students who are experiencing personal, family, health, educational or career challenges. Counselor may also be expected to see students on a walk-in basis for crisis intervention, make appropriate referrals for long-term services as needed, and assist with hospitalization/follow-up care upon release.

    Prepare required clinical documentation in a timely manner and in compliance with state statues and guidelines.

    Coordinate and provide BASICS (Brief Alcohol Screening Information for College Students), which is a two session consultation process that utilizes motivational interviewing techniques to assess students’ attitudes, beliefs, values, and behaviors related to alcohol and/or other substances.

    Provide prevention outreach/programming by assisting in the development and implementation of activities/events related to alcohol/substance abuse, body image/eating disorders, diversity/multicultural awareness, sexual assault prevention, sleep/stress management, and suicide prevention.

    Participate in case conferences, staff meetings, and other essential meeting as appropriate.

    Must be able to develop and maintain up-to-date counseling files and comply with Missouri state laws and appropriate statues regarding confidentiality and HIPAA. May be assigned other duties that the Executive Director deems appropriate and consistent with his/her level of training and experience.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    Education: Minimum of master’s degree in counseling, social work or other mental health field.

    Licensure: Candidate must have state and/or national licensure as a counselor, psychologist or clinical social worker or be under supervision for said license and eligible for licensure within the year.

    Experience: One to two years of counseling or student development experience in higher education preferred.

    Skills: short-term and solution-focused counseling skills; counseling and consulting with individuals; excellent verbal and written communication skills; creating, planning and implementing innovative prevention and education programs; ability to maintain professional and confidential demeanor in a busy and dynamic office environment; time management skills; ability to work well with a variety of staff with different work styles; intervening in individual, group or campus crises situations

    EQUIPMENT TO BE USED:

    Must be able to operate or be trained to use campus computer system and software, including Titanium, Microsoft Office and Microsoft Publisher. Must be able to use and troubleshoot minor problems on other office machines including the fax, calculator, telephone and local printer.

    TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

    Requires sitting, standing, bending and reaching. Requires manual dexterity sufficient to operate standard office machines such as computers, fax machine, calculators, the telephone, photocopy machine, office equipment. Requires normal range of hearing and vision.

    WORKING CONDITIONS:

    Typical tasks take place in climate controlled building with private office within larger suite. Some crisis or additional situations require movement to other campus buildings or off-campus locations.
