  • Responsibilities

    The Financial Aid Counselor is a salaried, benefitted position whose usual hours are Monday-Friday, 9 am-5 pm. Occasional nights and weekends are required for events. This entry-level position requires a bachelor's degree. Bi-lingual applicants are encouraged to apply.

    Counselors report directly to the Director of Student Financial Services and provide Financial Aid counseling services to all students and parents; they are responsible for the full financial aid process from awarding aid to processing withdrawals. They communicate with students via phone, walk-in appointments, email, and Zoom appointments. Counselors review documentation as required by federal, state, institutional, or outside agencies and communicate with students about requirements for aid. Specific reviews include FAFSA verification, Comment Code and FAFSA Reject reviews, Return to Title IV Funds (R2T4), some reporting, and the awarding of state grants including the Virginia Tuition Assistance Grant (VTAG) and College Transfer Grant (CTG). This position works closely with the offices of Admissions, Student Accounts, and Hornet Central to provide exceptional service for prospective and current students and their families. Individuals who will be successful at this job exhibit a heart for students and excellent commitment to customer service; they are detail-oriented, self-motivated, and work well with a dynamic team.

    • Demonstrated thorough knowledge of current operating system environment(s), equipment platforms, (including PCs and Mac OS as well as mobile device platforms, including iOS and Android), office productivity software and remote access methods.

    • Demonstrated ability to provide face-to-face, telephone, email, IM, and video-based support.
    • Familiarity with ITILv3 service management processes, focused on Incident Management and Request Fulfillment, and related event tracking in a service management tool.
    • Ability to respond to requests with a heightened sense of urgency in high-pressure circumstances.
