    The BU Alumni Medical Library (AML) Director provides leadership and strategic planning in support of the educational, clinical, research and administrative needs of the Boston University School of Medicine, Graduate Medical Sciences, Goldman School of Dental Medicine, School of Public Health, Boston Medical Center and affiliated clinical sites.  This position plans a $3.5 million Library budget, and directs library operations and services in the areas of acquisitions and collection development, reference and instructional services, circulation and interlibrary loan, digital collections and open access, research data management and library computing, facilities and space. The Director reports to the BU Medical Campus Provost and School of Medicine Dean, collaborates with BU’s Mugar Memorial Library and branches, the Fineman and Pappas Law Libraries and the School of Theology Library, and participates in local, regional and national consortia.  

     

    This position is responsible for overall Human Resources administration in the Library and hires, trains, evaluates and directly oversees 4 professional Library staff, including the Assistant Director of Library & Information Management Education and Assistant Director of Library Collections & Access Services, and indirectly 5 additional professional, 5 paraprofessional and 1.6 FTE student library staff.  The Director participates on numerous Committees and Working Groups representing the AML Library, and meets medical campus LCME and other accreditation standards.  The Director provides administrative oversight of the Library Education program across the medical campus curricula.

     

    This position provides leadership in collections and acquisitions decision-making, publisher licensing and contract negotiations, oversees the Library’s extensive e-journal and e-book collections and expenditures, and promotes implementation of technology-based information resources and services for the BU medical campus community. The position utilizes ExLibris Alma integrated library system for collections and centralized record-keeping, BU’s WordPress for the AML’s website, and SAP for financial and human resources management.

    Required Skills

    Required Qualifications:

    • MLS or equivalent degree from an ALA-accredited program • Minimum of 8 years of professional experience • Demonstrated progressively more responsible library management and organizational leadership experience • Strong understanding of evolving issues/trends in higher education, libraries, academic publishing, open access and scholarly communication • Demonstrated capabilities in strategic planning, financial stewardship, human resource management, risk management and related decision-making • Strong knowledge of health sciences library acquisitions and collections, publisher licensing and contract negotiations; demonstrated experience in local, regional and national collaborations with other libraries, consortia or networks for cost-savings and/ or to enhance access to resources • Strong knowledge of budget planning and management, monitoring and forecasting • Demonstrated success in LCME accreditation preparation, and Dental Medicine, Public Health or other health sciences accreditation standards • Demonstrated public services orientation • Demonstrated excellent team-building and collaboration skills • Demonstrated excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Health Sciences library experience at a major academic research university • Second Master’s degree, EdD, or PhD in health sciences or related area • Knowledge and experience in academic health sciences library research and teaching; knowledge of current trends in medical education and best practices in designing curriculum-integrated classes and program evaluation. • Knowledge of research data management • Grant-writing and management skills and experience • Demonstrated accomplishment fostering diversity and inclusion • Demonstrated track record of professional engagement and achievement
