Arup is seeking a Climate Adaptation and Resilience Consultant Intern in our East Geography region (Boston, NY/NJ, DC, or Chicago offices) to support our growing Resilience practice. Our resilience work spans public, private, and non-profit sectors, working to understand climate change vulnerabilities and risks and develop innovative solutions to adapt to those risks. We collaborate regularly with other Arup teams and offices to deliver multi-disciplinary planning, design, and engineering solutions that enhance resilience. Recent project work has included a critical infrastructure and social vulnerability assessment of the Lower Mystic River Watershed, a climate vulnerability assessment of the MBTA’s Orange Line, studies on the intersection of decarbonization and power resilience in NY, various resilience consulting projects with private developers, and several portfolio resilience assessments for large corporate owners.
As an Adaptation and Resilience Consultant Intern, you will support our mission to help shape a better world and to build a resilient future. The individual chosen for this position will be a highly collaborative self-starter with the ability to manage multiple project tasks and deadlines and prioritize tasks effectively. The successful candidate will also have a foundational understanding of climate change concepts and natural hazards and how those hazards impact our built, natural, and social environments. As a member of the integrated climate services team, you would ideally be interested and able to support climate mitigation and sustainability projects when needed.
Responsibilities of this specific role will include, but not be limited to the following:
Support the delivery of qualitative and quantitative risk assessments for multiple hazards including flood, extreme heat, wind, wildfires, earthquakes, and climate change
Work on resilient design analysis, performance optimization and climate adaptation consulting services on projects for the public and private sectors
Demonstrate research experience related to mitigation, adaptation, and resilience strategies for building and infrastructure projects and portfolios, corporations/institutions, and cities/communities
Prepare presentations, reports, memoranda, and other communication materials
Collaborate with others within the firm on projects that can benefit from your expertise
Provide general support to the growth of Arup's Adaptation and Resilience consulting business, including client development and general business development.
Qualifications:
Pursuing 4-year degree in Planning, Architecture, Building Engineering, Civil Engineering, Environmental Science, Economics, Public Policy, or a related field.
Minimum of a 3.0 GPA or higher
Demonstrated coursework in learning about climate change concepts and natural hazards
Demonstrated foundational understanding of concepts related to sustainability, climate change, climate resilience and natural hazards, and energy.
Demonstrated understanding of social equity and environmental justice issues
Excellent time management skills, with ability to prioritize and multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
Exceptional research, writing, communication, and presentation skills
Strong analytical, quantitative, problem-solving, and decision-making capabilities
Must not require Visa sponsorship now or in the future.
Preferred:
Internship experience with a planning or design firm,or government agency focused on environmental initiatives, sustainability, and resilience
Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite and demonstrated experience with graphics and visualization.
Demonstrated experience with ArcGIS
Understanding of factors which influence the resilience of buildings, infrastructure, organizations, and communities
Interest in climate science and understanding of climate change scenarios
Understanding of the effects of climate change and strategies for adaptation and resilience
Understanding of vulnerability and risk assessment methodologies
Familiarity with resilience tools and guidelines, such as the City Resilience Index, New York City's Climate Resiliency Design Guidelines, Boston's Coastal Flood Resilience Overlay District, the BPDA Climate Change Resilience Checklist, and other municipal tools and guidelines
