    Arup is one of the world’s leading climate risk and resilience advisors, strengthening the capacity of our clients to understand risk, build resilience, and generate co-benefits for those most impacted by natural hazards and climate change. This position will be with the Risk and Resilience (R+R) team in San Francisco, CA, a center of excellence for technical innovation in resilience. We create new services and digital tools from cutting edge technologies and methods to advance Arup into new markets which usher in a safer, healthier, sustainable and resilient future. We are a multi-disciplinary team with deep technical expertise in the built environment and a passion for increasing the resilience of communities. We can virtually simulate almost anything in the built environment, utilizing the best of risk modeling and digital innovation to predict the physical, financial and social impacts of natural hazards. Through this approach, we provide strategic advice of the highest technical caliber to inform decision-making and align resilience investments to manage risk and maximize co-benefits, so you can take action with confidence.

    As a Risk and Resilience Engineer Intern, you will support our mission to help shape a better world and to simulate our clients’ resilient futures. Through your work, you will help to advance and implement cutting edge methods that keep Arup at the forefront of our industry.

    Responsibilities of this specific role will include, but not be limited to the following:

    • Undertake analyses using engineering first principles and probabilistic approaches to solve our clients' most difficult challenges in the built environment.

    • Support qualitative and quantitative risk assessments for one or more hazards (earthquakes, flood, sea level rise, wildfire, wind, heat, climate change, etc.).

    • Collaborate with other engineers and risk consultants on the development of risk mitigation, climate adaptation, and resilience strategies for building and infrastructure projects and portfolios, corporations/institutions, and cities/communities.

    • Work on defined tasks under the close supervision of a senior engineer.

    • Prepare and communicate results to clients both internal and external to Arup.

    We encourage candidates who have interest/aptitude in any of the following:

    • Seismic engineering, including performance-based assessment philosophies

    • Wind engineering and extreme environmental loading

    • Risk and resilience assessment and design across multiple natural hazards

    • Climate science, climate change models, and/or climate downscaling

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Required

    • Pursuing Bachelor/MS/Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering (structural, water, hydraulics, geotechnics), Environmental Engineering, or Climate Science

    • Minimum 3.0 GPA or higher

    • Fundamental knowledge of structural engineering, disaster science, risk modeling, and/or climate science, as appropriate

    • Understanding of computer programming and coding experience

    Preferred

    • Coursework in probability and statistics, or data science

    • Experience with structural analysis, GIS, and/or risk assessment software and tools

    • Proficiency in computer programming
