& DRUMS BUILDING - Job Description: - The Intern will learn essential
support duties and responsibilities for the Fifes and Drums. This
position will divide time between interpreting military music and
administrative work with a focus on organizing and digitizing the
musical repertoire and the updating of similar primary source files.
Historic Trades internships are ten-to-twelve week in-depth work
experiences within workshops of the Historic Trades Department at
Colonial Williamsburg. Interns assist the full-time staff in shop
operation, including interpretation and demonstration to our guests, and
administrative work within the shop. Interns have the opportunity to
learn about the history of trades and technology, gain experience with
public contact and historical interpretation, to learn about careers in
living history museum programming and working with traditional hand
skills. Internships usually require commitment to a 40-hour work week
for the duration of the experience. Costumes are provided where
applicable. * Housing is NOT provided, it is the responsibility of the
intern. Work To Be Performed: - Assists Fife and Drum Staff by
organizing and digitizing hard copies of the Fife and Drum musical
repertoire and performing other duties related to program operation as
assigned. May involve engaging our guests within the Historic Area
interpreting and demonstrating fifing and/or drumming, - Ability to
follow explicit instruction, and work creatively within the Fife and
Drum structure. Ability to perform tasks in a timely and professional
manner. - Ability to transcribe and digitize hard copies of period
music, related primary source material, and archival material. - Works
to build and maintain a collegial work environment. - Follows safety and
security procedures established for the site, tools, materials, and
equipment. - Ensures that the safety and security procedures are
followed in the absence of the supervisor. - Performs other related
duties as required. - Job Requirements: - Demonstrated interest in fifes
and drums and a desire to explore the possibilities of a career as a
museum professional. - Good communication and guest service skills. -
Ability to work well as part of a team. - Adaptability to changing
schedules, assignments, and special projects and programs. - Aptitude to
learn new skills. - Ability to transcribe original material and transfer
to digital formats. Physical requirements: - Ability to stand for
extended periods of time - Ability to safely perform repetitive work -
Ability to work under extreme weather conditions with temperatures below
freezing and above 100 degrees F - Ability to work in noisy environment.
- Ability to perform physical activities including standing, sitting,
kneeling/squatting, lifting up to 75 pounds * Colonial Williamsburg is a
seven day a week operation and interns are required to be available for
work on weekends and holidays as needed for the duration of the
internship. Preferred Qualifications: - Enrollment or completion of
experience in the Fifes and Drums program at Colonial Williamsburg or
commensurate experience in fifing and drumming elsewhere. - 6-10 years
experience working with the administrative structure and leadership
style of the Colonial Williamsburg Fife and Drum Corps. - Experience
transcribing printed sheet music into digital formats. - Strong computer
and communication skills. - Familiarity with the Colonial Williamsburg
Fife and Drum program.
