    Internship - Legal Legal Denver, CO, USA 20.00 commensurate with experience Hourly Intern Legal Internship JOB SUMMARY This paid internship opportunity will allow you to gain exposure to all facets of being an attorney for a public pension fund. You will be responsible for a variety of moderately complex legal projects . You will provide services as requested or assigned by the General Counsel for such things as research, drafting legal opinions, and for providing legal support in transactional areas, the monitoring of outside counsel, and representing PERA in the administrative review process. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Conducts or supervises the analysis and research required for a variety of legal issues impacting PERA Assists in the management of outside counsel, which may include identification of requirements, selection, oversight of services rendered, and the associated billing Develops, or assists in the development of, legal policies and strategies and their implementation Participates in the development and drafting of legislation and PERA Rules Reviews, modifies, negotiates, or drafts contracts as required Ensures tax compliance and compliance with federal and state laws, statutes, and regulations Provides legal advice and support as appropriate or assigned for the Benefits, Support Services, and Investment departments of PERA Represents PERA in administrative processes or proceedings, which may include preparation or supervision of the preparation of case files, witnesses, presentation of the case, and the drafting of proposed findings of fact and recommendations Participates in dispute resolution, which may include development of strategies, negotiations, or settlements in both litigation and alternative environments Communicates with organizations within the industry regarding issues or interests in common with PERA QUALIFICATIONS Graduate student working towards a Juris Doctorate or Master's degree in related field Experience in interpreting current and proposed state and federal laws affecting the pension industry Experience in tax laws, contracts, and dispute resolution Inside counsel or private practice experience preferred Experience with litigation management preferred Strong analytical and organizational skills Strong interpersonal skills Excellent oral and written communication skills HOW TO APPLY Complete the PERA Employment Application online at www.copera.org click on the Careers link located at the top of the page.
