    JOB SUMMARY:

    The position requires a dedicated individual who will take direction from the Curator of Fishes and Invertebrates and/or General Curator in assisting in the coordination, training and implementation of professional husbandry protocols for the entire collection of fishes and invertebrates as well as other related projects and programs. The Senior Biologist will participate in planning and be responsible for assisting the Curator in implementing all animal care, exhibit maintenance, staff training and acquisition/disposition procedures for the fishes and invertebrate collection.  This position requires an individual with a high degree of professional experience in a broad range of specialty areas as well as a proven leader, trainer, and team member. The priorities for this position include fostering a positive work team atmosphere, attention to animal health, exhibit and visitor experience excellence.

     

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Help train new Husbandry Department employees to assure compliance with established standards and protocols.
    • Assist in recruitment, evaluation and selection of new Husbandry staff when needed.
    • Interacts with Animal Health Services and Engineering to affect repairs of critical life support equipment and complete joint projects.
    • Assure that animal food, maintenance equipment and supplies are ordered and stocked in appropriate amounts, given the needs of the aquarium and the availability of resources.

    Required Skills

    JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

    • A Bachelor’s Degree in Biology is required (5 years of professional husbandry experience may be considered in place of a degree).
    • A minimum of five years of professional experience at a public aquarium, zoo or similar institution and a demonstrated knowledge of aquarium operations. Operational experience accepted is related to fish, invertebrate, bird, reptile and amphibian husbandry. This experience should include an increasing degree of responsibility over time with a broad base of technical knowledge, skills and specialization.
    • Demonstrated ability to lead and work as a part of a team in a constantly changing environment as well as individually, with a minimum of supervision.
    • A valid driver’s license and certification from a recognized S.C.U.B.A. training organization. Experience with small boat operation and knowledge of boating safety issues is desired.   Ability to drive small-medium size trucks and tow trailer is required.
    • Ability to travel when necessary, usually not to exceed four weeks at one time.
    • Ability to work a flexible schedule which may include evenings and/or weekends and holidays. Ability to respond to emergencies on an on call basis.

     

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

    • Successful completion of pre-employment drug screening and SCUBA diving physical.
    • In good health and capable of performing strenuous and/or heavy physical labor.
    • No history of allergy related to animals or plants, which might interfere with ability to work.
    • Ability to remain on feet for long periods of time, climb stairs, bend and stoop.
    • Ability to work in all weather conditions.
    • No impairment of sight, smell, hearing, touch, balance and agility of movement which might interfere with ability to work.
    • Physical strength, including the ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
    • Immunocompetence (possible exposure to infections and parasitic disease).

     

    Note:   Position will involve exposure to inclement weather, dust, potentially dangerous and unpredictable animal species, and potential dangerous machinery, restraint devices and toxic chemicals and/or drugs.  Occasional use of protective clothing or equipment is required. (e.g. goggles, mask, gloves, and gowns)

     

    SALARY: $45,000 - $50,000
