    Job Description

      More than a million guests visit the Indianapolis Zoo to enjoy our 64 acres of animal exhibits and 3 acres of gardens. The part-time (29 hours or less per week) Guest Relations Team Member is a key member in engaging with the daily visitor in several ways. Correspondence with guests who have comments, questions and concerns via telephone, written communication and in person. Each member has a duty to make all guests feel welcome by engaging with the visitors, motivating the visitors and captivating the visitors.  You will be empowered to actively create memorable experiences for our guests.   The Indianapolis Zoo is currently on the hunt for energetic individuals to join our highly dynamic Guest Relations Team in our Guest Services Department. 

    Ideal candidates are committed to advancing the Zoo’s mission to protect nature and inspire people to care for our world.  Though this position is not responsible for animal care, our Guest Services team is vital to the Zoo’s operations. By providing over and beyond customer service, each team member impacts our guest’s overall experience. A cooperative and team-oriented personality, along with a friendly and courteous attitude is highly desirable.   Though this is an entry level position, experience working in customer service is a plus. A High School diploma or equivalent is desired, and applicants must be at least 18 years of age.  Pay rate for this exciting opportunity is $10.00/hr. 

    Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

    • Supports the Zoo’s mission to protect nature and inspire people to care for our world.
    • Performs a wide range of jobs including but not limited to handling guest inquiries, providing useful information to visitors who contact the zoo via email, telephone, in person or other media formats 
    • Must be comfortable working with the public in a polite, courteous manner and able to communicate one on one or in group settings.
    • Opens and closes butterfly conservatory, operates employee shuttle, Call Center and Hospitality Cart per the Guest Experience training materials. 
    • Uses good judgment skills and troubleshooting abilities especially when dealing with guests, volunteers, and co-workers.        
    • Creates value for each and every guest by suggestive selling.
    • Must enjoy working as a team but be able to work as an individual.

    Working Conditions:  

    • This is a part-time hour position that is scheduled to work 29 or less. 

    • Must have flexibility to work weekends, holidays, evenings, and overtime as needed.  Different shift work may be required. Flexibility is needed due to changes in the crowd size and/ or weather, this may include being asked to work beyond scheduled hours or working reduced hours. There is no guarantee of hours to the unpredictability of weather and crowd size

    • Exposure to indoor and outdoor environmental conditions, which include inclement weather, cold and hot temperatures, and humidity.  

    • Ability to detect, assess, identify and observe surroundings to make sound judgments, along with the ability to communicate verbally, comprehend and decipher information accurately, using a two-way radio and telephone.
