    Summer Internship: Government Relations Summer Internship: Government Relations Summary Title: Summer Internship: Government Relations ID: 1294 Department: Internship Description Objective Develop and implement successful projects and tactics to support strategies designed to maintain and cultivate strategic relationships with local and state elected officials, agencies, boards, commissions, civic organizations and communities. Summary The External Affairs and Communications (EAC) division aims to vigorously advance Shedd Aquariums mission through the promotion, protection and preservation of its reputation and business operations. We do this by maintaining and growing the institution's baseline levels of trust, perception and favorability as well as supporting fulfillment of annual attendance, access and revenue goals. Shedd Aquariums government relations function ensures our organization is responsive to political and civic priorities, and that specific institutional activities, issues and interests are aligned, top-of-mind and relevant to officials. Responsibilities & Duties Demonstrate commitment to Shedds vision, mission and values. Help to generate clear and accurate communications tailored for various audiences about Shedd Aquarium. Work alongside staff to implement special projects and initiatives and participate in community partner activities. Attend public and civic meetings and other events as determined. Assist with day-to-day administration and planning support. Perform topical research on various subjects. Monitor news, trends and key developments. Prepare briefings and provide regular reporting to various teams and leadership. Visit key elected official, agency and administration staff offices as needed. Other projects as assigned Qualifications Desired Majors: Political science, Communications, Public Affairs Desired Year in School: Junior or Senior Other Skills/Characteristics: Proficient understanding of local government operations, policy and protocol. Strong written communication skills, strong interpersonal skills and attention to detail. Ability to interact with government officials and senior executives. Must be able to work flexible hours including early mornings, nights and weekends as necessary Great attitude! Interest in conservation, zoo/aquarium, non-profit, cultural institutions and strong desire to excel in this industry. Must be comfortable with the rigor and demands of the fast-paced government relations field. Self-starter with the ability to work independently and bring projects from start to finish. Time Commitment: Minimum of 18-20 hours per week Minimum of 2 months Set schedule based on intern availability.
