    Spring Internship: Organic, Sustainable Gardening Spring Internship: Organic, Sustainable Gardening Summary Title: Spring Internship: Organic, Sustainable Gardening ID: 1275 Department: Internship Description Objective Interns will experience the sustainable choices available in organic gardening by working with our team in the gardens at Shedd. They will learn to grow food from seed to harvest using organic methods. Summary At Shedd Aquarium, we have a variety of organic gardens around the building that have been developed as educational experiences for our visitors. Beginning in late February/early March, we will be starting our seeds for the vegetable & annual gardens. We use an organic greenhouse near Addison and Milwaukee (transportation to greenhouse with us) to start the seeds. Well also be planning and preparing the site for these crops since planting begins when the weather breaks. We would like someone to work with us outside one day and inside the greenhouse another. Responsibilities & Duties Demonstrate commitment to Shedds vision, mission and values Partner with the Manager of Horticulture to learn about greenhouse gardening and sustainable seeds, as well as the skill required for growing healthy gardens. Assist with preparation and planting of gardens around Shedd. Create and install labels for garden plants. Interact with a diverse group of staff, volunteers, and small groups. Assist in general garden maintenance as directed. Other projects as assigned. Qualifications The intern should be studying Horticulture, Urban Agriculture, Environmental Studies or similar. Previous horticulture training helpful, but not required. Ability to handle multiple projects, strong communication skills, outgoing and friendly personality. Must maintain confidentiality. A strong desire to learn in this field. Willingness to work outside in all types of weather. Time Commitment A minimum of 14 hours per week within a Monday-Friday schedule, with a strong preference for morning availability. The exact schedule will be based in intern availability.
