    Conservation Intern JOB TITLE: Conservation Intern DEPARTMENT: Museums REPORTS TO: Chief Conservator New-York Historical Society, a preeminent educational and research institution, is home to both New York Citys oldest museum and to one of the nations most distinguished independent research libraries. N-YHS is dedicated to presenting exhibitions and public programs, and fostering research that reveal the dynamism of history and its influence on the world of today. Founded in 1804, its holdings cover four centuries of American history, and include one of the worlds greatest collections of books, manuscripts, graphic materials, historical artifacts, and American art documenting the history of the United States as seen through the prism of New York. JOB SUMMARY: The New-York Historical Society Museum and Library is offering a part-time internship in the museum's Conservation department. Applicants should have a bachelor's degree and have had some preliminary exposure to art conservation, an understanding of the field, and are planning to fulfill requirements towards enrollment into an art conservation graduate degree program. The candidate will work with the museum Conservation staff. Duties will include assisting with loan examinations and weekly gallery checks, as well as working with social media and studio technology. The Conservation Intern will work with the Chief Conservator on specific museum projects. Although the main focus of the Conservation department is the New-York Historicals painting collection, it is equally responsible for the well-being and maintenance of the vast museum collection. The Conservation Intern will report directly to the Chief Conservator. The internship will run for 10 months beginning in October 2018, and will be expected to work 21 hours per week (3 days). This is a paid internship. QUALIFICATIONS: * Bachelors degree, with plan to pursue graduate degree in conservation * Exposure to art conservation * Excellent attention to detail * Ability to work independently within a collaborative workplace team structure. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The position requires the ability to lift and carry for short distances storage boxes weighing up to 20 lbs.
