- Duties - Summary This position is assigned to the Office of Protection
Services (OPS), Washington Operations Division, Smithsonian Insitution,
and is responsible for providing physical protection and security for
staff, visitors, museum property and grounds. - Responsibilities -
Ensures the safety and security of the Smithsonian staff and visitors
and protects the Smithsonian treasures, property and grounds. - Conducts
routine and non-routine inspection to ensure compliance with
security/safety requirements. - Provides customer service to museum
visitors and is responsive to visitors' needs and leaves them with a
positive impression of museum security personnel. - Communicates
verbally, clearly and concisely. - Takes immediate action to deter
theft, vandalism, or any form of danger. - Applies physical exertion
such as long periods of standing, walking, bending, stooping, reaching,
crawling, and similar activities and lifting and carrying of heavy

Work may require physical exertion such as long periods of standing,
walking, bending, stooping, reaching, crawling, and similar activities

two-way radios. Incumbent may engage in such exertions when responding
to alarms or participating in training activities. Incumbent must have
good near and distant vision, ability to distinguish basic colors, and
ability to hear the conversational voice. Incumbent may have to climb
stairs in buildings and work in closed and confined spaces, such as
security booths and underground facilities. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS AND
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: - Incumbent is required to qualify annually
(at a minimum) with the standard security force firearm and ASP Baton.
Failure to re-qualify will result in removal from the position. - All
applicants appointed to Law Enforcement positions must attend and
successfully complete training program. Applicants who fail to
successfully meet this requirement will be subject to termination. - You
must not have a history of domestic violence or child abuse/sexual
abuse. - You must be able to become CPR and First Aid qualified and have
the ability to read and understand written material in language of the
security force.Qualification requirements must be met within 30 days of
the job announcement closing date. - Qualifications Experience: To
qualify, you must have 6 months of general experience that is
progressively responsible clerical, office or other work that indicates
ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform
the duties of this position as described and 6 months of specialized
experience equivalent to at least the GS-3 level in the Federal Service
or comparable pay band system. For this position Specialized experience
is defined as providing physical protection and security for staff,
visitors, museum treasures/property and grounds; performs routine access
control duties, such as checking ID badges, to ensure that only
authorized employees/contractors are allowed access to staff areas of
museums and facilities; providing customer service to visitors and
staff. Education: Successful completion of two years of education above
the high school level may be substituted for the 6 months of general
experience and 6 months of specialized experience. A combination of
qualifying education and experience may be used to meet the
qualification requirements. Experience refers to paid and unpaid
experience, including volunteer work done through National Service
programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g.,
professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student,
social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge,
and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that
translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all
qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.Part-time and/or
unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to
determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to
note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week. Investigation
of Fitness: A character investigation may be conducted on applicants
