Cmplx Posting Type: External Applications accepted through: Jan 11, 2019 Job Description: The Kansas Juvenile Correctional Complex (KJCC) is seeking highly qualified applicants for the position of Juvenile Corrections Officer II, KJCC Topeka, KS. This is a supervisory position. The incumbent will assign, direct, review, and evaluate the job performance of Juvenile Corrections Officers I (JCOI) under his or her supervision. The incumbent is to serve as support to the Juvenile Corrections Officers I (JCOI) and facilitate day to day operations. Incumbent will supervise varying areas or units within the facility depending on post. Hours: Subject to change-10:00PM to 6:00AM (Regular Time Off: Tues/Wed) This is full range supervisory corrections work in a juvenile correctional facility ensuring public safety by providing oversight of juvenile offenders and support to reintegration programs. This position rotates duty posts as specified by facility Post Orders. Actual percentage and duty as evaluated may vary due to rotation and post assignments. Percentages are taken as an average conditioned by on-going rotation. Staffs in these positions are required to stay at their posts until properly relieved and are required to return to duty when called during emergency situations. Supervision of Staff and Youth Supervises Juvenile Corrections Officer Is through direct contact and works indirectly with other staff. Conducts performance reviews by reviewing and evaluating performance within time parameters set forth in agency policy, monitors staff schedules, keeps records of time & leave usage and addresses concerns and recommends employee corrective actions as needed. Available for individual and group supervision to provide consultation to subordinates, utilizing both informal coaching and performance reviews to provide direction and feedback related to work performance strengths and areas needing improvement. Manages posts to respond to juvenile offender behaviors as appropriate, to prevent and/or redirect acts that are dangerous or destructive to staff, others or property by applying consistent approved structured techniques as set forth in policies and procedures of the institution, and to provide reinforcement for observed positive behavior. The work of this position requires ongoing proactive communications and interaction with juvenile offenders designed to disrupt, rather than reinforce, antisocial behavior and inappropriate reactions to situations. Direct post operations in absence of shift supervisor to ensure effective functioning by assuming the management duties of supervisor. Program/Team Participation Works directly with Unit Team, Behavioral Health, Education, and other departments within the facility to foster and model a multi-disciplinary approach to offender management. Provides consultation to these teams and regularly participates in these processes to assist with addressing challenging issues and problems. Meets regularly with unit operations and program staff to disseminate/receive relevant information and to discuss issues/solutions. Works with staff to develop and implement programs, activities, interventions that are in line with best practices. Communicates, verbally and in writing, pertinent information to other shifts and supervisors by completing required reports and checking for accuracy and completeness. Assist training department in conducting new & annual training as deemed necessary. Promotes a satisfactory and harmonious work environment through teamwork and effective communication and avoids behaviors that would be disruptive or destructive to agency harmony. Collaborates with colleagues and interdisciplinary professionals. Completes other duties as assigned by supervisor or through initiative to maintain successful operation within the Operations Division. This position is subject to regular rotation to any post and/or shift within the facility. Must be capable of performing Essential Physical Functions (See attachment to Position Description) Regular and predictable attendance is an essential function of this position. This position is subject to the possibility of mandatory overtime. Minimum Requirements: High school diploma or equivalent and one year of experience in the care, control, and treatment of offenders. Coursework in criminal justice or the behavioral sciences may be substituted for the required experience as determined relevant by the agency. Valid Drivers License. Attends and successfully completes all required HWC training. Must maintain HWC certification. Also: Must be 21 years of age at time of appointment, High School Diploma or G.E.D., Free of felony convictions or adjudication, whether or not expunged, Free of conviction or adjudication by a court of law or court-martial, of a crime punishable by imprisonment for a term exceeding one year (whether or not the sentence was imposed). Free of conviction as an adult of Driving Under the Influence (or comparable law regarding driving while intoxicated or under the influence of a controlled substance) in the past 24 months, as an adult or juvenile. Free of conviction or adjudication of a misdemeanor involving drug use or possession in the past 60 months, Free of any criminal charges, indictments or outstanding warrants pending. Candidate must take and pass a drug-screening test approved by Office of Personnel Services. Preferred Skills and/or Qualifications: Certification as a Juvenile Corrections Officer by the Deputy Secretary of Juvenile Services. This certification is issued upon completion of the Basic Training and must be renewed annually as prescribed by the Commissioner. CPR as provided in annual in-service training. Ability to deal effectively with individuals under restraint. Knowledge of procedures and practices of supervising juvenile offenders confined to a juvenile correctional facility. Ability to stand for long periods, respond quickly to emergencies, and potentially use force to subdue violent juvenile offenders.Previous supervisory experience and the ability to lead and counsel subordinates.
