We have a diverse collection of fresh and saltwater fishes, elasmobranchs, invertebrates, birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians. Our collection includes little blue penguins, Nile hippos, and the most sharks on the east coast.     We are currently seeking a full-time Associate Veterinarian to join our team of dedicated staff to provide high-quality, clinical care to a diverse collection of aquatic and terrestrial animals with an emphasis on preventative care and evidence-based medicine. The Veterinarian will be responsible for the clinical management (examination, diagnosis, treatment) and routine preventative care of the aquarium’s diverse collection. 

    This position will provide veterinary care for all the species at Adventure Aquarium. In-house services a water quality lab run by the Husbandry Curators and veterinary lab run by the Veterinarian and Veterinary Technicians that includes digital radiography, ultrasonography, hematology, blood biochemistry, cytology, parasitology, and gross necropsy. The Veterinarian will lead the Animal Health team comprised of a Sr. part-time certified veterinarian technician, a second part-time veterinarian technician, veterinary technician, with potential for outside consultation with local colleagues including veterinarians board-certified in zoological medicine, other veterinary specialists, and specialty diagnostic laboratories, as well as 30+ members of a knowledgeable Husbandry Team.

     

    SALARY RANGE: $65K - $80K COMMENSURATE WITH EXPERIENCE

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • As a member of the Husbandry team, you will lead by example by being patient, kind, humble, respectful, selfless, forgiving, honest and committed when interacting with one another and guests.
    • Examines any taxa of animal presented for evaluation and formulates diagnostic, treatment, and monitoring plans as indicated.
    • Performs animal health diagnostic procedures such as hematology, cytology, and necropsy.
    • Participates and assists the veterinary technician and husbandry staff in the administration of treatments.
    • Collaborates with local specialty hospitals to perform radiological, ultrasonographic, endoscopic and surgical procedures.
    • Oversees the induction and monitoring of injectable, inhalant, and immersible anesthesia.
    • Maintains accurate, clear and thorough medical records using Microsoft Outlook and TRACKS EMR system.
    • Helps to train, teach, and mentor biologists, veterinary students, and volunteers as needed.
    • Maintains a high level of professionalism, integrity and confidentiality.
    • Complies with safety and security directives, policies and procedures.
    • Performs other related duties as assigned.
    • This position has been identified as Safety Critical with authorized operator requirements.

    Required Experience

    JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

    • DVM degree or equivalent from an accredited School of Veterinary Medicine.
    • Current New Jersey veterinary license or within 3 months of time of hire.
    • DEA license and NJ Controlled Drug Substance license.
    • USDA accreditation.
    • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in veterinary practice with a strong non-domestic animal component (exotic companion animal, wildlife, zoo, or aquatics) is required.
    • Ability to organize, manage time and set priorities while meeting deadlines.
    • Exceptional interpersonal skills with an ability to work with diverse groups with tact and professional maturity.
    • Ability to work a flexible schedule which may include some weekends, evenings and holidays.
    • A valid driver's license and ability to successfully pass a pre-employment driving record check
    • Experience with medical record software and proficiency with Microsoft Office products and standard PC operating systems is preferred.
    • Post-graduate clinical training in zoological medicine is preferred.
