The Markets & Securities Services (MSS) business encompasses HSBC’s sales and trading operations for institutional and corporate clients. Markets has four core businesses which include Foreign Exchange, Equities, Securities Financing and Fixed Income. HSBC buys/sells both cash and derivative products with a focus in the US to deliver international products to our US-based clients, as well as delivering US products to our international client base.

The Non-Financial Risk team is a function that sits within the MSS Chief Operating Office and broadly supports the MSS business. The Non-Financial Risk team helps manage and control non-financial and new risks in the business, including but not limited to operational, conduct and product lifecycle risk.
An overarching purpose is to protect HSBC, its People, Clients and Financial Markets by helping safeguarding the delivery of fair outcomes to our customers and avoiding disruption of the orderly and transparent operation of Financial Markets.
Reporting, and functionally accountable to the Americas Head of Non-Financial Risk for MSS. The successful candidate will provide cross-asset support to the MSS business and support the Bank’s non-financial risk agenda including continued assistance with regulatory programs and key Group transformation programs.
The role holder will support the non-financial risk and control framework within the Americas, contribute to the effective execution of regional governance, support the and assurance team within the MSS Non-Financial Risk team.
They will play a key role in helping support and, where necessary, leading the enhancement/improvement of controls and best practices within the region.
The role holder will need to work closely with the other Regional control teams, Governance team and Assurance team, as well as business management community and their support functions to collectively ensure the effective implementation and design of control standards, governance and procedures with the aim of sharing and promoting best practice. They will also play a key role in helping support the enhancement/improvement of controls and best practice within the region.
Key Accountabilities
The role of the Non-Financial Risk Officer is to help facilitate business in the effective design of the control framework and to ensure its ongoing operating effectiveness within an agreed risk appetite.
Responsibilities include:
Risk & Control Assessments
Proactively identify emerging risk areas impacting MSS business, including review of trigger events.
Support oversight of risks and controls in coordination with business management.
Support the Compliance Detailed Self-Assessment and Operational Risk and Control Assessments for the MSS business and ensure guidance is consistently applied across MSS assessments.
Support the embedding of the Periodic Risk Assessment for the Americas Region.
Work closely with business management, support functions, and Risk Stewards to ensure robust controls are in place and act as an additional point of escalation with regards to downstream control issues. Influence support functions in their remediation of control gaps.
Support issue management processes and generation of management information.
Assurance & Audit Engagement
Act as a point of contact regarding Audit and other independent second line of defense exams and reviews.
Monitor the implementation of Management Action Plans (MAPS) across the Americas to ensure timely remediation and appropriate escalation.
Change
Assist with the identification of control enhancements within the current control environment and, therefore, the control change agenda across asset classes.
Collaborate with business management and the Non-Financial Risk team across asset classes to understand key risks, and identify new and emerging risks.
Observation of Internal Controls
Help maintain HSBC internal control standards, including the timely implementation of internal and external audit points together with any issues raised by external regulators
Understand, follow, and demonstrate compliance with all relevant internal and external rules, regulations and procedures that apply to the conduct of business activities associated with the role, specifically HBUS, HSI, and HNAH internal controls and compliance policies and manuals
Requirements
ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE
Degree holder, preferably with a professional qualification, with background knowledge of internal control and risk management in Markets
Experience in business management or risk/control roles within a Markets business
Basic understanding of Markets business and products
Strong Excel & PowerPoint skills coupled with strong analytical skills to enhance procedures and controls
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, able to negotiate and work effectively with senior business leaders across business lines and geographies
Strong problem solving and prioritization skills and be able to perform multitask under pressure with a keen eye for detail
Excellent team player with a proactive and self-motivated attitude and ability to think and act independently.
