Operations Apprentice City of Norfolk, VA 14 reviews - Norfolk, VA $20,099 - $32,778 a year Description The City of Norfolk's Department of Utilities is seeking 15 qualified applicants for a six-month apprentice program. The program is designed to train candidates for permanent full-time positions as Equipment Operators II (truck drivers), Equipment Operators III (heavy equipment, i.e., payloaders and excavators), and Utility Maintenance Mechanics I (maintenance on pumps and machinery). This program includes classroom training, hands-on demonstrations, and on-the-job work experience with repair and maintenance crews. License fees and training materials are provided. Candidates who successfully complete the program will be eligible to apply for permanent vacant positions. Department Hiring Salary: $11.82 per hour Essential Functions Essential functions include, but are not limited to: * Acquires the knowledge, skills, and experience necessary to become proficient with equipment operations, maintenance, or like trade by: * Obtaining necessary vehicle and technical licensing; * Attending classroom instruction; * Taking adequate notes; * Contributing to discussions; * Passing academic tests; * Completing personal qualification standards (PQS); * Participating in practical exercises. * Supports the work and functions of tradespersons, maintenance, and operations staff of the Department of Utilities by: * Operating vehicles, heavy equipment, and powered and manual tools; * Assisting with the clearing of job sites to ensure safety by removing debris'. * Loading and unloading equipment; * Assisting with the maintenance of inventory. * Performs work in either indoor or outdoor environment in all weather conditions. * Works at various heights, in awkward positions, confined spaces, and non-typical spaces, zones or environments. * Utilizes personal protective equipment (PPE) to avoid safety hazards and risks. Education/Experience Work requires knowledge necessary to understand written instructions, simple processes, and the routine operation of machines. Level of knowledge equivalent to graduation from high school or equivalency. No experience required. Additional Information & Requirements * Valid Driver's License required.
