    Job Description

    SUMMARY

    The Web Manager oversees the Web team, which is a team of creative thinkers and makers that designs, develops, and maintains the Exploratorium website, online experiences, and mobile applications that support the Exploratorium’s mission of igniting curiosity and inspiring creativity in people of all ages. This position is responsible for representing and upholding the highest standards in user experience and user design, balancing and foregrounding the needs of multiple online audiences (e.g. general public, educators, collaborators, donors), and navigating the tensions between stability and innovation in an ever-changing medium. The Manager also proactively collaborates with the Graphics, Photo, Editorial, and Video departments, as well as with project teams and other groups throughout the institution to achieve creative, high-quality, high-impact work. This position reports to the Director of the Media Studio.

     

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    • Manage the Web department, including hiring, supervising, coaching and mentoring staff; lead critique sessions, tailor professional development plans for the team, and encourage fruitful cross-departmental collaboration within the Media Studio.
    • Working closely with the Resource Manager, vet, prioritize, and assign work. Assess workload and consult with groups requesting work to define project requirements and scope. Work with project managers and with Web staff to validate production schedules and facilitate work done on time and within budget.
    • Support Web staff in prioritizing work according to institutional priorities. 
    • Create and refine tools, processes, and systems that support efficient workflow, good communication, and sustainable practices.
    • In collaboration with the Web team, articulate and widely disseminate the principles, strategy, and rationale for core tenets of the Exploratorium website such as information architecture, navigation, and design.
    • Build and track the department’s budget with support from the Administrative Director; participate in long-range planning for the department.
    • Represent Web team in meetings, fostering positive relationships and good communication with other groups across the institution.
    • Facilitate the creation of technical guidelines and templates in support of content creators across the institution. Help translate technical requirements and constraints for non-specialist internal collaborators.
    • Along with IT, vet third-party online commerce and communications tools. Identify appropriate technology solutions and services for our online publishing platforms and manage contracted vendors.
    • Lead team discussions and learning around diversity, equity, and inclusion; in partnership with other D&D managers and DEI leadership, guide the growth of the department’s skills in cultural competency.
    • Create and maintain relationships with on-call or contract web developers and designers.
    • Troubleshoot problems and suggest creative, tactful solutions.
    • Additional duties as assigned.

     

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    • BA/BS degree OR equivalent combination of education and experience
    • 8 years’ experience in product management, web or software development; non-profit experience a plus
    • Minimum 4 years’ experience managing a team of web designers and developers; strong mentorship and coaching skills required
    • Excellent project management skills, particularly in stakeholder management, scoping, and communication 
    • Demonstrated experience with user-centered design practices
    • Some experience working in a content management system (such as Drupal), working understanding of PHP, MySQL, JavaScript and jQuery a plus
    • Familiarity with issue ticketing software (e.g. JIRA) and team collaboration software (e.g. Basecamp, Smartsheet) a plus
    • Experience managing software and technology vendors, including contract oversight
    • Some fluency in issues around diversity, inclusion, and access within the technology field
    • Talent for collaboration and effective teamwork, and demonstrated ability to work with people at all levels of an organization
    • Track record of successfully juggling competing priorities; graceful under pressure
    • Experience managing budgets and creating job estimates
