Summary: This position will be responsible for activities related to coal handling of deliveries to a coal-fired 1700 MW plant. The incumbent will be required to ensure the safe operation of equipment within the coal yard. Duties and Responsibilities: - Ability to perform the duties of the position in a safe manner. - Ability to operate Company vehicles and heavy equipment including dozers - Use hand, power tools, and equipment - Communicate conditions of coal yard system and equipment to others - Apply knowledge of steam power plant operations and basic power plant principles to daily decision-making and work tasks - Operate computers and printers - Discern and respond to verbal and auditory signals from the operating system - Work without supervision inspection while carrying out duties - Knowledge of and ability to operate various switches and the effect it has on the operation - Meet physical requirements of the job such as perform tasks while standing, walking, climbing and squatting. Work with extended reach above head and in front of body and lift 50 pounds and carry while walking distances of up to 10 feet. Minimum Requirements - High School diploma or GED equivalent required. - 1 year prior experience running heavy equipment and/or 1 year post-secondary education in power generation operations - Must receive a rating of "recommended" on the NRG Energy pre-employment skills assessment Additional Knowledge/Skills & Abilities: - Able to operate heavy equipment including dozers - Understanding of basic electrical theory - Demonstrated mechanical ability - Demonstrated problem-solving skills - Good communication and interpersonal skills Working Conditions: - Work in and around rotating equipment, high voltage electrical equipment, high noise areas, dusty areas and elevations up to 100 feet - Work in all temperatures and climate conditions. Some temperatures can be extreme - Work in confined spaces, some requiring the use of respirator protective equipment - Performance of duties requires working rotating shifts and response to calls 24 hours/day, seven days/week - Emergency situations will require the use of respirator and climbing of stairs to reach safety shelters - Established facial hair in the sealing area of a respirator is not permitted - Reside within a reasonable distance from the facility in order to be available for call-outs and emergencies NRG Energy is committed to a drug and alcohol free workplace.
