    OVERALL PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVE OF POSITION

    This position provides indirect (excise and other indirect) tax services and support along with tax research and analysis for the Tax department of a global merchandiser and processer of agricultural goods.

     

    PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    Tax Return Filing Responsibilities

    +--------------------------------------------------------------------------+ | - Oversee and assist with the preparation of Indirect Taxes: | | | | -Excise (motor fuel) | | | | -Commercial feed, seed and fertilizer | | | | -Sales and Use | | | | -Property (real and personal) | | | | -Canadian GST / PST | | | | - Research tax planning strategies to reduce or avoid tax obligations | | with the use of incentives/credits and to reduce any possible risks. | | - Responsible for completion of any excise or other indirect tax | | credit claims or incentives. | | - Work with commercial team to identify license needs in new and | | existing jurisdictions. | | - Apply for and renew any tax licenses (excise and other indirect) to | | meet business needs. | | - Continually develop, improve and streamline processes and procedures | | for excise and other indirect tax return preparation. | | - Research tax law to ensure compliance. | | - Review returns to ensure completeness, accuracy and timely filing. | | - Manage all excise and indirect tax audits. | | | | Supervision Responsibilities | | | | - Manage, support and develop tax staff. | | | |   | | | | ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES | +--------------------------------------------------------------------------+ | - Support NA Tax Department with any tax matters. | | - Research tax planning strategies to reduce or avoid tax obligations | | with the use of incentives/credits and to reduce any possible risks. | | - Other duties as assigned. | +--------------------------------------------------------------------------+

    Preferred qualification:

    • Familiarity with Microsoft Great Plains

    WORKING CONDITIONS

    • Extensions of regular working hours are occasionally necessary to complete time-sensitive projects, attend training or to respond to emergencies.
    • Climate-controlled office environment.

     

    EMPLOYEE SUPERVISION

    • Supervises one Tax Associate

     

    DECISION MAKING/ACCOUNTABILITY

    • Accountable for accurate and timely filing of tax returns - inaccurate data or late filings could result in substantial financial losses to the Company. Responsible for the reliability of data and information given from the tax department. Relationships with internal and external (state department and federal government) staff are critical and any damage to the integrity of information may result in the Company’s reputation being harmed. This could lead to unwelcomed audits and further financial damages. Requires the ability to maintain and control confidential information.

    Required Experience

    Basic qualification:

    • Seven plus years of indirect (or similar) tax experience

     

    Preferred qualification:

    • Preference to individuals with previous supervisory responsibility.
    • Preference to individuals with previous experience with state and federal departments of revenue including resolution of issues and audits.
    • Knowledge of the principles and practices of excise and other indirect taxes

    EDUCATION/PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES

    Basic qualification:

    • Bachelor’s degree in business related discipline
