Mechanical Engineer Intern Position Summary: **** The Mechanical Engineer Internship role will utilize classroom knowledge of statics, strength of materials, and theory of machines to evaluate failed hand tools and power tools used in the automotive market. The goal is to identify methods for improving the lifespan of the tools. Knowledge and experience in design for manufacturability will be essential as most solutions will need to be cost-neutral. The successful candidate will utilize clever and innovative thinking to solve difficult problems. Key Responsibilities: * Become an expert on Matcos Business Intelligence data warehouse to learn how to mine data on field failures both by quantity and cost * Create pareto charts to communicate top issues by category to management * Create graphs to understand failure rates and calculate warranty projections using statistical methods * Review failed tools returned to the Warranty Returns Center by gathering like items and sorting for common failures * Determine root cause of the tool failure and develop potential solutions * Experiment with different solutions by working with our manufacturing base to implement changes * Experiment by modifying or creating new tools to solve existing problems * Document and present warranty savings projects to management * Current junior or senior pursuing a Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering Technology * Exceptional skills in Microsoft Office Excel with the ability to create charts and graphs. Knowledge of pivot tables and VLOOKUP functions are valuable * Excellent communication and presentation skills are needed as well as the ability to negotiate.
