    POSITION SUMMARY

     

    Working within a correctional institution environment and under instructor supervision, to complete inmate educational requirements by scheduling and assigning instructional activities and duties/assignments as directed by the certified staff. 

     

    Under general supervision of the site administrator with daily direction from the teacher, to perform paraprofessional instructional activities; relieves an instructional staff member of routine tasks related to the instructional assignment; provides intensified learning experience for students in assigned area; performs a variety of clerical and supportive tasks for instructional personnel; and does related work as required.

     

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB 

     

     

    • Conveys by words and action the values expected by CWI and IDOC.
    • Assess student learning by preparing and administering assessments.
    • Under the supervision of the instructor, maintain student learning with one-on-one tutoring.
    • Initiate and follow up on verification of educational services from state agencies.
    • Reviewing, correcting and maintaining testing supplies.
    • Maintain records by documenting learning accomplishments, attendance, and behavior in student contact logs and electronically.
    • Assist in program electronic reporting.
    • Maintains confidentiality of all information regarding students.
    • Maintain safe and clean working environment by complying with institutional procedures, rules and regulations.
    • Monitors class activities under the supervision of the instructor, plans lessons, monitors and appraises student learning results.
    • Checks and corrects student assignments.
    • Monitors student behavior and progress, reports problems, and suggests modifications to student instruction plans.
    • Consults with teacher and staff members on academic and behavioral planning, management and evaluation.
    • Delivers testing services and maintains testing supplies.
    • Maintains student electronic records and files.
    • Participates in staff training and professional development.
    • Maintains confidentiality of all information regarding offenders.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

     

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

     

    • Must have completed at least two (2) years of study at an institution of higher education (60 academic core credits)
    • OR, obtained an academic associate’s or higher degree in any academic area
    • OR, achieved a passing score (460) on the ETS Paraprofessional Test within 90 days of hire.
    • English usage, punctuation, spelling and grammar
    • Basic arithmetical concepts
    • Public education goals and objectives
    • Basic first aid principles
    • Some knowledge of human behavioral management methods as related to an educational environment
    • Experience presenting educational materials to students in a group or one-on-one educational setting
    • Experience entering and retrieving data and maintaining records using an automated record system including typing labels, lists, forms and reports
    • Willing to work in a correctional facility
    • Assume responsibility for supervising students
    • Learn and utilize standard teaching aids and office equipment
    • Perform routine clerical work
    • Learn and utilize basic methods and procedures to be followed in instructional settings
    • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions
    • Maintain cooperative working relationships with staff, students, parents and the general public
    • Experience as a Special Education Instructional Assistant preferred.
    • Experience in adapting curriculum to meet adult offender needs which is typically gained by working with adults in high-risk populations, or school drop-out; experience in life skills curriculum development; and experience in individualized instruction for special populations preferred.
    • Some experience with behavioral intervention and/or peer group interaction problem-solving techniques which are typically gained by past experience or education or experience in applied behavioral intervention/problem solving techniques; education in social sciences, communication, or related areas preferred.

  • Qualifications

    High school diploma or GED preferred.  Above average interpersonal and communication skills.  Must be able to work under pressure. Must be able to work alone, and use independent judgement. Capable of handling multiple tasks simultaneously.  Ability to work rotating shift including weekends (ie. Friday, Saturday & Sunday), holidays and days off.  Ability to read, write, fluently speak and understand the English language.
