    We are seeking a Senior Staff Core Infrastructure Architect to define and govern enterprise - wide infrastructure architecture in a highly regulated financial services environment, with strong emphasis on hybrid cloud strategy, modernization off mainframe, observability, and SRE - led resilience.

    This role operates at organizational scale across Global Infrastructure, spanning public cloud, private cloud, datacenters, mainframe, global networks, and runtime platforms, and partners closely with existing Cloud Architecture, SRE, and Security teams to deliver infrastructure that is observable, resilient, auditable, and regulator - safe .

    You will act as a high - leverage individual contributor, shaping long - term infrastructure and reliability outcomes without direct people management.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    *Define end - to - end hybrid infrastructure patterns and customer journeys across:

    • Public and private cloud platforms

    • Mainframe, Datacenters and mission - critical legacy systems

    • Core Infrastructure services - including compute, network and storage

    *Establish observability - first , DevOps driven architecture across all infrastructure layers, including:

    • Standardized metrics, logging, and tracing foundations

    • Clear service ownership, dependency visibility, and telemetry expectations

    • Architectural patterns that enable root - cause analysis and auditability

    • CI/CD automated deployments facilitating inner sourcing and rapid release to production

    *Partner closely with GI Product and SRE teams to:

    • Define reliability targets (SLIs/SLOs) for core infrastructure services

    • Embed resilience, capacity, and failure - mode thinking into architecture

    • Ensure platforms support incident response, change management, and post - incident review

    • Have comprehensive Product testing and release automation in place to enable scale

    • Define architectural guardrails to meet regulatory expectations for:

    • Availability, disaster recovery, and business continuity

    • Security controls, segregation of duties, and least privilege

    • Operational transparency, traceability, and audit readiness

    • End-to-end DevOps managed infrastructure with formal release management and TDD/BDD.

    *Collaborate with Cloud Architecture teams to align hybrid strategies, avoid duplication, and ensure consistent, regulator - approved patterns

    *Author and steward Architecture Decision Records (ADRs) suitable for governance, audit, and regulatory review across the Infrastructure Estate.

    *Mentor Staff - level engineers and architects across infrastructure, reliability, and platform domains

    QUALIFICATIONS

    • At least 15+ years-experience with Technology strategy and large-scale program delivery

    • Strong and diverse technical background - ideally an Infrastructure Developer

    • You have done “DevOps” work, such as building CI/CD pipelines or setting up cloud hosting environments

    • Extensive experience in infrastructure products. This may include network, compute , storage, database, midrange, mainframe, observability with a strong focus and practical experience in using both public & private cloud

    • You have experience mentoring more junior engineers, helping them to succeed and grow in their roles

    • You build effective work relationships, giving and receiving constructive feedback, and your colleagues at all levels and across all teams trust you

    • You can break down platform silos, evaluate from all perspectives, and put enterprise thinking first.

    • Experience implementing SDLC in a controlled or regulated environment

    • Strong influencing and negotiation skills

    • Exceptional stakeholder management skills, including at the senior-level

    • Excellent written, interpersonal and presentation communications

    • Experience working in a matrixed organization and influencing people at all levels

    • Demonstrated leadership and management experience in working with cross-functional, geographically dispersed teams on complex projects

    • Brings support and positive attributes to a culture that is respectful, supportive, goal oriented , and diverse

    • Extensive experience designing and operating large - scale , regulated infrastructure

    • Deep expertise across cloud platforms, physical infrastructure, networking, and identity

    • Hands - on involvement in legacy modernization within risk - sensitive environments

    • Strong grounding in SRE and DevOps principles , including reliability engineering, capacity planning, incident management and CI/CD

    • Experience designing enterprise observability platforms and operating models

    • Comfort partnering with Risk, Compliance, Audit, Security, and Operations stakeholders

    • Ability to influence architectural outcomes without formal authority

    • Clear, executive - ready communication and strong technical judgment

    Technologies we use at Amex include:

    • Infrastructure components are based around VMware, IP networks and SDN, SAN and NAS fabrics and OpenShift. Experience using public cloud services is crucial (AWS / GCP)

    • Go and Java are our primary server languages - familiarity in at least one language will be beneficial

    • Code lives in GitHub Enterprise and flows to production through a CI/CD pipeline built on GitHub Actions

    • Code runs in Kubernetes-managed Docker containers hosted in a mix of private and public clouds

    • Other key tech includes GraphQL , gRPC , Kafka, Postgres, Couchbase, Cassandra, Elasticsearch, Redis, OpenTracing , Jaeger, Prometheus, and Grafana.
