    Job Description

    The Developer Tools Team has an ambitious charter to build the next generation of tooling that will enable faster development at scale. This is a newly formed team consisting of tenured and new Square engineers. The team will be responsible for scaling Square’s source code management tools and systems, scaling the backend build system, backend developer experience, and developer environment management. 

    Engineers on your team feel at home working in and around a broad swath of technologies and understand the daily frictions of development work their colleagues face. You’ll work with teams across Square to eliminate bottlenecks and develop complementary solutions that allow developers to move faster.

    You will: 

    • Initially guide a core team of senior ICs while still performing technical duties (ie. coding, debugging, code reviews) in a more limited capacity.

    • Grow the team by hiring exceptional talent, coaching and developing engineers, cultivating pragmatic engineering decision-making, and leveraging your technical & managerial expertise to constantly raise the bar.

    • Set the vision for your space and manage all expectations and deliverables.

    • Partner closely with teams across Square to make technical, design, strategy and product decisions.

  • Qualifications

    Qualifications

    You have: 

    • A computer science or engineering undergraduate degree or equivalent experience, including hands-on software development experience.
    • 2+ years of experience managing, recruiting, and retaining strong engineering talent and growing effective teams.
    • Strong verbal and nonverbal communication skills. You’re adept at understanding complex technical concepts and helping teams make decisions to move forward as well as communicating those decisions up.
    • Experience leading impactful, public and internal facing software products that have successfully been delivered to customers.
    • Interest in working across multiple technical domains, including backend microservices and both internal and external-facing tools.
    • Interest in building new systems from the ground up as much as improving existing systems to achieve maximum performance.
