  • Responsibilities

    Responsible for the timely preparation and filing of miscellaneous multi-state corporate tax compliance and other related duties.  This includes the preparation of detailed supporting workpapers, journal entries, assisting with audits and a focus on the better way initiative with process improvements and automation. 

    • On a daily basis, the tax specialist will review Oracle workflow invoice tax holds for approval of sales tax rate variations and use tax accruals.  Tasks: Use Oracle AMTD Tax Manager tax link module to review workflow.  Review invoices on shared imaging drive. Make decision to accept or reject workflow.  The tax specialist will use his/her knowledge of the multi-state sales tax rules & rates to determine whether to accept or reject an invoice or tax accrual.  The tax research solution, TTR and Vertex Software may also be used to perform independent research for rules and tax rates. If invoice should be corrected, work directly with vendor, business unit or the Central Procurement Group.
    • In review of invoice, tax specialist will review procurement module and may decide that the purchase order commodity code or ship to information should be corrected.  Work with procurement coordinator or manager to resolve.
    • Work with accounts payable staff to resolve tax link issues.
    • The tax specialist prepares 3-4 required journal entries on a monthly basis, which includes sales & use tax reclass entries, Vertex corrections and a manual use tax accrual not handled by the Vertex software. Tasks: Generate Oracle and Cognos GL reports.  Review weekly AP transactions.  Use standard Oracle journal entry templates.  The tax specialist will use his/her knowledge of the multi-state sales tax rules & rates to prepare the journal entries.  The tax research solution, TTR and Vertex Software may also be used to perform independent research for rules and tax rates.
    • On a monthly basis, the tax specialist will review the accounts under his/her responsibility and prepare balance sheet account reconciliations for the finance accounting group.  Tasks: Generate Oracle and Cognos GL reports.  Analyze transactions for proper classification in the reconciliations.   
    • After month end, run data extract in Vertex-Oracle.  Balance GL accounts with data and accumulate information in data upload templates for 3rd party tax preparer.  This must be done prior to 5th day of close week, preferably on day three.
    • Use OneSource tax calendar module to track and log filings that fall under the tax specialist’s responsibility, including the returns filed by the 3rd party return preparer.  
    • On a monthly basis, there could be from 50-80 sales and use tax returns filed.  
    • Other miscellaneous compliance as assigned.  For example, accumulation and support relating to the Nebraska LB312 incentive project, various incentive filings with state and local jurisdictions, Washington B&O reports, and other local licensing reports.
    • Sales/Use tax data collection and validation as it relates to state and local audits. Assist with responding to audit inquiries.
    • Maintenance of filing deadlines within Tax Calendar.
  • Qualifications
    • 2 year college degree or equivalent experience required
    • 4 year college degree in Accounting preferred
    • 2 total years of experience
    • Familiarity with Oracle accounts payable module and Vertex software is desirable.
    • Familiarity with general multi-state corporate tax compliance. 
    • Ability to research tax questions independently and thoroughly.
    • Must demonstrate appropriate analytical skills, use of critical thinking to resolve problems and focused on process improvements and automation.
    • Must be proficient in all MS Office programs,
    • Must be self-motivated and a self-starter. 
    • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
    • Must be able to prioritize tasks and work well under deadlines.
    • Must have excellent interpersonal as well as written and oral communication skills 
    • Military education or experience may be considered in lieu of civilian requirements listed
