  • Responsibilities

    An Advisement Specialist provides individual academic counseling to students regarding placement, course selection, selection of a major and academic performance. Advisement Specialists advise and enroll undergraduate and graduate students assigned to the Academic Advising Center, maintain frequent and regular interaction and follow-up with assigned advisees, refer students to the appropriate academic support services and resources on campus, and work closely with academic departments to facilitate student success. Advisement Specialists report to the Academic Services Director.

     

    Advisement Specialists may be assigned staggered work hours including evenings and weekends to accommodate the needs of a diverse student population. The successful candidate must have the ability to deal extensively and effectively with a wide variety of individuals using excellent interpersonal, listening, and communication skills in order to advise students with respect to their academic goals. This position may also include duties related to training faculty advisors and, depending upon academic credentials, teaching first-year orientation classes. Advisement specialists will be required to develop and maintain a broad understanding of non-academic university services and resources available to students.  They may also be asked to serve on shared governance bodies or liaise for specific academic programs or student populations. 

     

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

    A demonstrated commitment to student success and retention is essential. A baccalaureate degree with university or college level advisement or enrollment experience is required. Excellent oral and written communication skills, ability to maintain accurate records, and knowledge of computer technology and software applications in order to process registrations, enrollments, and track student progress are required. Successful candidates must have the ability to explain different degree options to students and to coordinate with various offices across campus.

     

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

    A master’s degree with two or more years experience working with college students in academic advising is preferred. Experience advising specialized populations such as athletes, international students, active duty military, or graduate students is a plus. Prefer experience with Banner. Preference will be given to candidates with previous experience working with diverse traditional and non-traditional student populations.

     

    SALARY RANGE: 

    Commensurate with experience.
