    Job Description

    The Green Business team at SF Environment is hiring a Green Business Associate.

    The Green Business team engages with small, local businesses to help them become environmental leaders through the implementation of cost-effective environmental practices. The Green Business Program is part of the Toxics Reduction and Healthy Communities team at SFE, whose mission is to safeguard human health and the environment by implementing policies and programs that reduce the public’s exposure to toxic chemicals and promote safe handling of hazardous waste.

    This is an entry-level role designed to offer exposure to a career pathway in sustainability. As the Green Business Associate, you’ll recruit and work with small and medium-sized businesses to help them implement environmental best management practices. You will learn about a wide array of sustainability measures in the areas of energy, water conservation, pollution prevention, zero waste, transportation, and climate. You’ll also gain knowledge of outreach and marketing tactics, behavior change strategies, public speaking, program administration, and database management. We are looking for a bilingual Spanish/English candidate who can engage with business owners across San Francisco.

    This position involves occasional evening and weekend work.

The project can be something you initiate on your own or build upon an existing project. The goal of the program is to expose you to different environmental career paths and get you ready for your next professional role, whether that's within or outside of the City.

    What You’ll Do - The duties specified below are representative of the range of duties assigned to this position and are not intended to be an inclusive list.

    • Recruit new businesses into the Green Business program through direct and indirect marketing techniques including but not limited to cold calls, corridor walks, planned visits, presentations, networking events, and other forums.
    • Assist enrolled businesses in achieving Green Business recognition by performing in-depth phone consultations, on-site or virtual Green Business evaluations, and conducting trainings.
    • Assist with documenting environmental practices in order to track changes and measure impact.
    • Maintain relationships with existing and prospective Green Businesses and encourage in-process businesses to complete their certification process.
    • Assist in the development and maintenance of Green Business program standards, toolkits, and resources.
    • Assist with developing content for the Green Business website, newsletter, and social media channels.
    • Report on status of businesses certified and environmental savings accrued.
    • Assist in the planning and execution of Green Business events such as the Green Business Awards and the Green Business Expo.
    • Assistance with other duties as assigned.
  • Qualifications

    ** Minimum Qualifications**

    • Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university; or
    • Two years of college education from an accredited college or university, and six (6) months of work experience, including internships, research positions, or other experience, relevant to the duties described in the job description.

    • Customer service, sales, marketing and/or outreach experience
    • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in written format
    • Excellent organizational and project management skills
    • Fluency in Spanish
    • Familiarity with San Francisco’s neighborhoods
    • An understanding of equity, inclusion, and diversity concepts
    • Possession of a valid California driver’s license and willingness to drive a City-issued vehicle as needed (vehicle is provided)

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    Requires an indicated interest and aptitude in those skills associated with community outreach, environment-focused education, public service or a related field and a willingness and ability to acquire the needed skills through training and work experience.

    All persons employed by the City and County of San Francisco are required to comply with the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 by presenting documents to verify identity and authorization to work in the United States. The SF Environment Department currently does not sponsor work visas.

    ** Exempt Employment Status** - This is an exempt appointment with an anticipated duration of three years, contingent upon City budget conditions, demonstrated competence and professionalism in the first year of employment. Participation in this program does not guarantee future employment with the San Francisco Environment Department or the City and County of San Francisco. This position is excluded by the Charter from the competitive civil service examination process and shall serve at the discretion of the appointing officer.
