Lauderdale, FL Job Type Permanent Full Time Department Office of the Sheriff Job Number 18699A Closing 8/31/2018 4:30 PM Eastern Minimum Requirements Associates degree (60+ credits) with course work emphasis in Health Science or a closely related field, Bachelor's or Master's degree preferred. Two (2) years of fitness experience in conducting fitness assessments, nutritional analysis, and health risk appraisals which includes: body composition analysis, health risk assessment, and behavior modification consultations. Demonstrated knowledge of cardiovascular, muscular and nutritional components, preferably in corporate health programming or a paramilitary environment. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered. Such experience must be clearly documented for consideration. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS Certifications: Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS/CPR) within six (6) months of employment. Previous coursework in basic First Aid is preferred Certification in the area of physical fitness or personal training recognized by at least one of the following associations: National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA): CSCS, TSAC-F or CPT National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM): CPT, PES, or CES American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM): EP-C, CPT or CEP American Council on Exercise (ACE): Certified Personal Trainer (CPT) Fitness Institute International, Inc.: CPTS Cooper Institute (CI): Law Enforcement Fitness Specialist or Fire Service Fitness Specialist CrossFit: Level 1 Instructor or above Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA) Certified Personal Trainer Nature of Work Under direction of the Training Division, the purpose of the position is to manage the operation of the fitness programs within the Broward County Sheriff's Office. Work involves facilitating employee participation in fitness and wellness programs. Incumbent provides services to include fitness assessments, physical ability testing, nutritional advice, lifestyle analysis, and health risk appraisals to include body composition analysis, health risk assessment, and behavior modification consultations. Incumbent oversees operations for the fitness center. Work involves conducting orientation and initial training for the fitness center. Programs include but are not limited to: performance enhancement, functional capability, weight management, stress management, Ergonomics, injury prevention and lifting safety. Work is reviewed through conferences, reports and observation of program effectiveness. Performs related work as directed. Manages operation of the fitness center. Assists with the Physical Abilities Test (PAT) that establishes minimum health and fitness standards for all sworn personnel; provides remedial assistance to sworn personnel that fail to successfully pass the PAT. Develops programs that integrate physical fitness, wellness education, and health risk reduction to optimize the health and productivity of employees. Conducts fitness assessments, nutritional analysis, health risk appraisals to include body composition analysis, health risk assessment, and consultations to address modifiable behavioral risk factors. Develops individualized exercise prescriptions, and provides initial and on-going counseling to employees. Conducts orientation and initial training for the fitness facilities. Delivers training programs in areas to include but not limited to: physical development, stress management, weight management, ergonomics, injury prevention, and safe biomechanics. Facilitates employee participation in fitness programs through delivery of services that are user- friendly, viable and accessible. May lead exercise sessions and supervise ancillary exercise staff, including assistance in the training and oversight of fitness and nutrition internship students. Assists in developing promotional literature and conducting specific fitness center events e.g. sportscompetitions, fitness challenges, training opportunities, and educational presentations; plans calendar of events for programs developed. Writes interest articles on health topics for the employee intranet and newsletter; assists in the development of fitness handouts, workout routines, and other digital or printed materials. Responsible for the safety of all persons utilizing the fitness facilities; trains employees and eligible family members on use of equipment in the fitness center. Prepares and monitors the fitness and wellness center's operating plan and budget, proposing recommended updates to equipment and facilities, as needed. Responsible for scheduling and maintaining fitness center service hours that meet the needs of employees. Oversees the housekeeping duties of the fitness center; ensures that fitness equipment is safe, clean, and in proper working order; manages the maintenance schedules for the fitness equipment. Enforces fitness center rules and policies regarding safety and utilization. Assumes responsibility for the development and instruction of group exercise classes. Promotes a positive image of the agency to maximize utilization of services. Keeps abreast on current industry trends and issues affecting the health and fitness industry to incorporate state-of-the-art techniques and equipment into facility operations. Maintains competency in cardiac life support and emergency protocols and procedures. Develops reports in response to management requests for specialized information. Attends meetings, workshops and conferences as directed. May represent the agency at health and wellness events and participates in selected associations involved in public safety or corporate health and wellness. Performs related duties as directed. Tasks involve the ability to exert physical effort which involves lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials in excess of 50 pounds. Tasks are performed in a workout facility where proper provisions are in place in terms of employee safety and well-being. Due to the nature and location of the work environment, tasks include potential for intermittent exposure to disagreeable elements consistent with routine conditions of a workout facility environment. Tasks include working around gym equipment, outdoor training facilities and materials handling where physical risks are predictable and/or controllable by observance of standard safety precautions.
