The Press Secretary is a Mayoral Appointee and will assist the Communications Director in providing 24-hour communications support to Mayor Hancock and the City and County of Denver. This fast-paced office provides a wide range of communications support to the city, including internal and external communications management, development, coordination, correspondence and distribution. Mission of Mayor's Communications Office As the principal communications office for the Hancock administration and the City and County of Denver, the Mayor's Communications Office leads a cutting-edge approach to communicating with the people of Denver and various audiences. The Office advances the agenda of the Hancock administration by communicating the progress of the City and County of Denver and embracing the values of integrity, transparency and accountability in all communications. About Our Job The primary emphasis of this position will be to educate the community on programs, initiatives and work of the Hancock administration through the coordination and distribution of information through traditional media and marketing avenues. This individual will serve as a spokesperson, manager of daily media, lead on public announcements and open records requests and will assist with crisis communication. Primary responsibilities will be managing media on and off-the-record, planning and executing external communications/public relations efforts, and managing marketing efforts for Mayor Hancock's Office. Job duties will include the following areas of focus: Media management and spokesperson responsibilities * Build and maintain excellent working relationships with the press. * Provide on the record comments to the media (primarily off camera work)on behalf of Mayor Hancock and the City and County of Denver. * Proactively research and develop strategic, positive story ideas, craft compelling press communications, organize press conferences, events and photo opportunities and serve as on-site media contact. * Work with city department communication teams to coordinate and execute public comments, events, outreach and announcements. II. External communications and writing * Develop and implement comprehensive communications outreach and distribution plans designed to increase public awareness of programs, initiatives and work. * Coordinate outreach and messaging with internal and external communications partners. * Develop messaging for Mayor and the administration. * Create statements, press releases and more to communicate Mayor and administration's programs, initiatives and work. III. CORA * Take on role of agency records coordinator for the Mayor's Office. * Fulfill all public information requests. About You We are seeking a candidate with the following qualifications: * Bachelor's degree in communications, public relations, journalism, public administration, political science, marketing, or a related field. * Generally 3-4 years of professional level experience in journalism, communications and/or public relations functions. * Strong, critical writing skills. * On-the-record and public speaking experience. * Creative thinking for new and innovative communication solutions. * Crisis communications training/familiarity and communications strategy development. * Competent and detail-oriented with experience managing individual projects/work. * Values diversity and inclusivity, internally and externally. * Personal and professional values align with Mayor Hancock and his administration. * Proficiency in Spanish (preferred, not required). * Experienced communicator with various audiences * Strategic, critical thinker/astute in politics * Resourceful problem solver * Competent multi-tasker/calm under pressure

A Master's Degree may be substituted for one year of the minimum experience requirement. Additional appropriate experience may be substituted for the minimum education requirement.
