This specialized Internship will be a part time position working with a City contractor as a Utility Technician I. This internship will include hands on experience, classroom learning, and water and wastewater industry exposure. The intern must be able to commit to the full assignment, and be available to work a weekly 40-hour schedule. The internship assignment is for 6 months. Major Duties and Responsibilities: The intern will learn to: * Perform manual and semi-skilled labor tasks related to construction, repair, and maintenance; cut out streets and driveways, manually excavate, backfill and compact excavated areas to facilitate repair. * Locate utilities on the job; dig out utilities manually or by machine. * Perform simple measurements; interprets meter readings; perform routine safety inspections. * Receive parts and materials from warehouse personnel; interact with utility customers. * Transport materials, tools, and equipment to and from job sites; set up and remove warning signs and traffic control devices. * Operate the following: * electronic utility locators; hand and power tools, equipment such as jackhammers, tampers, fire hydrants; gas monitors, air compressors, pneumatic tools and generators. * Work with water and sewer mains. * Maintain utility vehicles in clean, operating condition. * Maintain truck inventory; maintain clean and safe work area. * Perform related work as required, Minimum Qualifications: High School Graduate/GED Valid Driver's License Physical Requirements: * Able to lift, push or pull up to 90 pounds. * Able to climb a ladder. * Stand for long periods of time and walk on rough terrain. * Work in all types of weather, environmental conditions and confined spaces. * Work 8 or more hours.
