Technical work includes the following: Working with the general public answering questions related to the applicable codes and ordinances, investigating complaints for possible zoning and maintenance violations, inspecting structures and properties to ensure compliance of the applicable codes and ordinances, reviewing plans for compliance, maintaining electronic file records and preparing correspondence for violation notices, preparing cases for legal actions when required and providing information to citizens regarding permitting processes. Typical Tasks: Researches and stays abreast of all applicable maintenance codes, city and zoning ordinances; advises citizens, professionals and concerned groups on applicable codes and ordinances. Performs routine patrols and inspections of assigned area to identify violations of applicable codes and ordinances; makes initial contact with the property owner to resolve violations; issues written notices of violation; conducts follow up inspections to ensure compliance with written notice; resolves disputes over violations through counseling, meetings or negotiation with parties involved. Responds to citizen complaints of possible code/ordinance violations; inspects and verifies compliance or non-compliance with applicable codes and ordinances. Utilizes computer technology and works with related computer programs to update inspections and to maintain pertinent case information with related notes and photos. Completes written correspondences with daily use of email and electronic calendar. Prepares legal documents for initiation of legal action for non-compliance of written notice. Attends court for associated legal documents, provides relevant evidence and testifies in court. Attends staff or case meetings to exchange information; attends classes or seminars to improve knowledge and skills. Reviews plans and specifications; provides related permitting information to the public; issues zoning permits. Coordinates with federal, state and local agencies involving City ordinances or related matters; prepares reports or studies and may present information as required. Performs other assigned duties for damage assessments when required by the City during a disaster event. Performs other related duties as assigned or needed. The selected candidate must have working knowledge of computers, programs and related components including but limited to copying machines, fax machines, printers, laptops, tablets and other wireless components. Required Qualifications VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT: Requires high school diploma or GED and any combination of education and experience equivalent to satisfactory completion of one year of college education in urban planning, environmental health/studies, engineering, or a closely related field. EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT: In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standard, this position requires a minimum of one year of related, full-time equivalent experience. SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES: Requires a valid driver's license with a driving record that is in compliance with the City's Driving Standards. The selected candidate must pass State certification exam for Property Maintenance and Housing Inspector, attend selected State Code Academy Modules and complete other required in-house requirements within 18 months of hire date. Preferred Qualifications Prior work experience involving interaction with the public in a capacity of enforcement, inspections, dispute resolutions and/or investigations. A vast experience in customer service is preferred.
