A typical work day may include , but not be limited to, troubleshooting transmission relay schemes and power line equipment; performing distribution and transmission switching; generating switching orders as required; making and evaluating protective relay tests; and generating drawings and prints for electrical/electronic additions or corrections. To be considered for this JOURNEY level position you must have graduated from an accredited two year college with major course work in engineering technology or related subject, or completion of Relay Technician training program, and three years experience in electrical utility protection and control work, or any equivalent combination of education and protective relaying experience. A valid Florida Driver's license is required at the time of hire. A valid U.S. Driver License is required at the time of hire; a valid Florida Driver License is required within 30 days of start date. NOTES: Residential Boundary Requirement - Must live within 40 minutes of NW 34th St. & 39th Ave. within one year of appointment. Work requires physical strength and agility. CLASSIFICATION STANDARDS Positions allocated to this classification report to a designated supervisor and work under limited supervision. Work in this class is distinguished from higher classes by its lack of supervisory responsibility and from lower classes by its advanced technical skills. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Graduation from an accredited two year college with major course work in engineering technology or related subject, or completion of ICS Relay Technician course, and three years experience in electrical transmission work, or any equivalent combination of education and experience. LICENSES/CERTIFICATES Valid Florida Driver's License required. NOTES Work requires physical strength and agility. Work requires performing duties in high places. Work may require exposure to hazardous conditions and noxious chemicals. Work may require performance of tasks outdoors under varying climatic conditions. On-call work outside of business hours may be required. EXAMPLES OF WORK** ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Installs, tests, and calibrates all distribution, transmission, and applicable generation relays. Maintains related records. Troubleshoots transmission relaying schemes and power line equipment. Performs distribution and transmission switching and generates switching orders as required. Makes and evaluates transmission relay phasing tests. Generates drawings and prints for electrical/electronic additions or corrections. Reviews and corrects drawings for new equipment. Installs, operates, and maintains electronic equipment. Assists in training of other personnel in safety, relay matters, and control equipment matters. Attends work on continuous and regular basis. NON-ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Assists in enforcement of safety rules and regulations. Will be required to respond under emergency conditions. May be required to transport, mix, handle or use hazardous materials (other than cans of gasoline, batteries, pumping fuel or access to normal janitorial cleaning materials) or may be responsible for facilities or equipment carrying current, fluids or gas that could endanger the public or other employees. May be required to supervise employees designated as performing "safety sensitive" functions, for purposes of the Drug Free Workplace Program, depending on job assignment and work location. May frequently chauffeur other employees, depending upon assignment and work location. Performs other related duties as assigned. SELECTION FACTORS Thorough knowledge and understanding of logic circuits and their symbols. Knowledge of operation of all substations, including of operational procedures and functions in the distribution sections of applicable substations. General knowledge of applicable substation and power plant equipment and operating policies. General knowledge of Regional Utilities philosophy on distribution, transmission, and system operations. Ability to perform continuity tests and troubleshoot from prints any type of power equipment and control devices. Ability to oversee work of other personnel and maintenance and operation of a vehicle and test equipment. Ability to work effectively with coworkers and the general public.
