Natural Scientist Assistant Summer Intern Pay Range From10.50 Pay Range To10.50 Closing Date4/28/18 -Requisition Number: 50537 Department: Park and Recreation Full-Time/Part-Time: Part-Time Regular/Temporary: Regular The City of Fort Worth Park and Recreation Department is recruiting for several part-time Natural Scientist Assistants to work at its Nature Center & Refuge location. These are seasonal positions; will work up to 40 hours with no benefits. Weekends are required. Job Description The Fort Worth Nature Center & Refuge program provides training and experience in the coordination, implementation, and operation of a natural area facility by assisting with an array of natural resource management and research activities and/or providing natural science and conservation oriented recreational and educational activities to the public. We are hiring for three summer positions who will be rotating through both the resource management operation and the natural history education operation. Duties will include, but are not limited to: All positions: 1. Perform facility opening and closing duties; patrols area to ensure safety procedures are followed. 2. Assist staff with everyday work duties, special projects, and volunteer groups. 3. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required. 4. Adhere to assigned work schedule as outlined in the Department and City attendance policies and procedures; ensures all behaviors comply with the Citys Personnel Rules and Regulations. 5. Assist and coordinate overnight camping experiences including camping, fishing and paddling. When assigned to the Refuge Service Center: 1. Perform entry-level staff work in the conservation, development, maintenance, and protection of wildlife and plant populations. 2. Assist with the development and implementation of wildlife habitat enhancement projects and biological inventories. 3. Assist with the development, implementation and analysis of natural resource research projects. 4. Conduct general maintenance on equipment and facilities throughout the Refuge. When assigned to the Hardwicke Interpretive Center: 1. Assist with the development and implementation of educational and recreational programs centering on natural science topics for groups including school programs, educator workshops, summer youth camps, public outreach programs, seminars, and nature hikes. 2. Assist with the care and maintenance of captive education animals. Reviews animal care logs to ensure proper care. 3. Work with staff to maintain education exhibits. These positions are funded for a maximum of 400 hours which must be completed within a 5 month period. Interns are expected to work 40 hours per week, with anticipated start date in late May to early June 2018 with an end date of mid-August to mid-October 2018. Exact start and end dates are negotiable QUALIFICATIONS Minimum Qualifications: Education: H.S. diploma/GED and a minimum of 16 credit hours from an accredited college or university with major course work in a natural or physical science, including biology, geology, botany, range management, environmental science, forestry, or a related field and is currently enrolled in college or graduated from college within the last year. Experience: No direct experience is required. Other Requirements Valid Texas drivers license, depending on assignment. The successful candidates will be required to perform extensive public contact, possess excellent written and verbal communication skills and demonstrate a willingness to work with live animal exhibits. WORKING CONDITIONS Inside and outside working conditions; exposure to varying weather conditions, dangerous animal species, herbicides and pesticides, moving objects and vehicles; movement on uneven terrain; must be able to operate assigned vehicles and equipment; Non-smoking environment in City buildings and vehicles. Physical Conditions Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for sitting, standing, or walking for an extended period of time; climbing using both arms and legs; adequate speech, vision, and eyesight required; perform manual labor including, lifting supplies and materials up to 50lbs.
