The City of Griffin, Georgia has an opening for a full-time Apprentice Lineman. This position has an eight (8) step pay scale starting at $13.80/hr. JOB SUMMARY This position completes training while assisting in the installation, repair and maintenance of the citys electric utility system. MAJOR DUTIES Drives and operates a bucket and digger derrick truck; operates and maintains a variety of digging equipment; provides the Journeyman Lineman with materials; ensures truck is properly stocked; prepares sites for primary and secondary work; does necessary groundwork for the setting poles. Assists the lineman in the construction, maintenance and repair of overhead electrical distribution lines; pulls new conductors, bonds wires, and installs transformers, circuit breakers, voltage regulators, re-closers, capacitors, fault indicators, service drops, lightning arrestors, switches and metering equipment. Assists the lineman in the construction, maintenance and repair of underground electrical distribution lines; assists in excavations and in installing underground conductors and conduits, transformers, switchgears, switching cabinets, concrete vaults and fault indicators; terminates underground conductors; utilizes equipment to locate underground faults and utilities. Reads electrical schematics of systems and diagrams, maps and blueprints. Installs and maintains street lights, security lights, traffic lights and recreational lights. Performs troubleshooting duties; locates faults, bad grounds, and other sources of power failure; makes repairs. Flags traffic at work sites. Responds to after-hours emergencies. Performs related duties. KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION Knowledge of the construction and maintenance of overhead and underground electric utilities. Knowledge of the installation of electrical conduit cables, wires, switches, pole line equipment, and substation equipment. Knowledge of safety precautions involved in working on and in proximity to energized lines. Knowledge of electric code requirements. Skill in the operation of specialized vehicles, tools and equipment. Skill in performing electric system maintenance and repair activities, including climbing poles and working at heights. Skill in participating outage restoration activities. Skill in oral and written communication. SUPERVISORY CONTROLS The Electric Superintendent or Line Crew Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results. PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell. The work is typically performed in an office and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The Apprentice Line Worker, Electric Page 2 employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, and machinery with moving parts. Some of the work is performed on utility poles, in elevated buckets, and in the presence of electrified lines. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS High School diploma or GED. Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with having had a similar position for one to two years or having the aptitude for this line of work. Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid drivers license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
