Under limited supervision of the Watch Commander, Jailers assist sworn personnel within the jail facility by monitoring inmate movement, maintaining order, and controlling entry and exit to jail facilities. The Jailer also assists with other departmental office and support work, and various assigned duties within the Police Department. All submissions must be received by the filing deadline of Thursday, April 12, 2018 at 4:00 p.m.Applicants possessing relevant work experience, including extensive public contact work are highly desirable. Incumbents must be able to work a varied shift schedule that will include weekends, holidays, late nights, and evenings. Candidates hired in this position will be enrolled in a mandatory six week correctional officer core course (attended during work hours) that will take place Monday through Friday during the hours of 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. All prospective Jailers must successfully pass a thorough police background check with the Laguna Beach Police Department, a fingerprint check with the State Department of Justice, a pre-placement physical including drug test and a psychological exam. The appointing authority will further review the job related qualifications of those deemed eligible for hire before making selection decisions. Examples of Duties Employees in this position maintain effective, cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the performance of duties, including the general public. Additionally, employees must exercise effective judgment and initiative as needed. This is non-sworn position. Positions in this class are distinguished by the need to exercise independent judgment and initiative while under the direct and/or functional supervision of designated sworn personnel, in performing duties within specific functional areas of responsibility in a detention facility. Examples of duties include, but are not necessarily limited to: 1. Assisting in supervising the conduct of inmates in a variety of custody situations within a jail facility. 2. Monitoring of inmates on a rigid time line. 3. Processing inmates (completing multiple forms by hand, typewriter or computer). 4. Assisting in performing administrative and operational duties such as maintaining logs and records, hourly check logs, preparing reports or memorandums, and other record keeping as directed. 5. Ensuring the maintenance of order, security and compliance with administrative regulations, judicial rulings, Department Policy & Procedures, and Rules & Regulations. 6. Operating a computer terminal to obtain criminal history information including warrants, or other holds, and updating classification or housing information as necessary. 7. Conducting interviews with inmates. 8. Securing inmate property and monies, as necessary, in compliance with Departmental Policy and Procedures. 9. Responding to public inquiries regarding inmates. 10. Enforcing jail rules. 11. Preparing written reports. 12. Conducting Title 15 visual compliance checks within jail facility. Minimum Qualifications Education: Graduation from high school or the equivalent. Related college level coursework and experience in the field of criminal justice is highly desirable. Experience: One year of public contact work experience, preferably in a law enforcement agency. License/Certificate Requirements: Due to the performance of field duties, which requires the operation of a City vehicle, a valid California Driver's license and an acceptable driving record are required. Special Requirements: * No prior felony convictions * Must be able to pass a comprehensive background investigation and medical examination * Must be able to pass a polygraph examination * Must be at least 18 years old at time of appointment Incumbents will be required to successfully complete the OC Sheriff-Coroner Department's Jailer Training Academy and/or training of a similar nature.
