    Public Works Fleet Mechanic Intern Public Works, Fleet Maintenance Grade: 20 , $10.00 per hour GENERAL DESCRIPTION Entry level mechanic work in general repair of cars, trucks and other small equipment. Work is performed under the direction of the Director of Public Works and general supervision of the Lead Fleet Mechanic. Essential Job Functions: (Essential job functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills and other characteristics. The intern fleet mechanic performs mechanical and service work on all City vehicles, trucks and other equipment. ¨ Performs oil changes, chassis lubes, tire and wheel maintenance. ¨ Repairs and maintains small equipment and engines. ¨ Assists the Lead Fleet Mechanic. ¨ Performs preventative maintenance on all vehicles and equipment. ¨ Road tests smaller vehicles such as cars trucks and small equipment. ¨ Cleans and details vehicles. ¨ Cleans shop and . MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: ¨ Knowledge of and equipment used in automotive repair. ¨ Ability to learn and apply training in automotive repair. ¨ Ability to follow oral and written instructions. ¨ Basic skills for maintenance of small equipment and vehicles Education and Experience ¨ High school graduation or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma. ¨ Enrolled in or have completed automotive tech course or small engine repair preferred. (A comparable amount of training or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.) Licenses, Certifications or Registrations: ¨ Possession of valid Florida drivers license. ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL SKILLS ¨ Ability to communicate, both orally and in writing ¨ Acceptable eyesight (with or without correction). ¨ Acceptable hearing (with or without hearing aid). ¨ Heavy (45 pounds and over) lifting and carrying. ¨ Balancing, bending, climbing, crawling, kneeling, standing, stooping and walking. ¨ Pulling, pushing, reaching and throwing. ¨ Distinguish colors and odors, and has depth perception. ¨ Driving and operating equipment. ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS ¨ Works inside and outside in various weather conditions with chemicals, dust, electrical/radiant energy, fumes, gases, grease/oils, noise, odors, solvents. ¨ Poor lighting, slippery and uneven surfaces, vibrations. ¨ Heights, below ground level, confined spaces. ¨ In or around moving vehicles and equipment. ¨ In or around hazardous areas..
