JOB SUMMARY: Record and disseminate information within the department, to other agencies, and the public within the legal limitations of public disclosure and rights to privacy; perform a variety of communicative functions and technical and clerical duties in support of the Renton Police Department as well as providing various services to the public in a 24/7/365 office setting. Shift work includes nights, weekends, and holidays as required. Shift assignments are determined by seniority. New Specialists could be assigned a weekend/night shift for an extended period of time. SUPERVISION: Reports To: Police Service Specialist Supervisor Supervises: None JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: Essential Functions: Handle in-station and telephone inquiries; respond to officer and City personnel radio requests on a police radio console; answer a variety of technical questions, refer individuals to appropriate offices and agencies; and process requests for information according to established guidelines using discretionary decision making. Maintain a variety of confidential files, reports, and records; enter and update information into state and national law enforcement computer systems. Data entry and scanning of various police reports, statements, forms and letters; make copies and distribute as required. Perform a variety of support duties related to law enforcement, including dissemination of criminal and civil records, written correspondence, filing, merge reports into database and make necessary corrections process traffic and criminal citations, civil papers, and records for departmental use; prepare cases for court docket. Conduct call outs for SWAT, Investigations, Traffic, VIT, and other City departments. Process and issue Concealed Pistol Licenses (CPL) and weapon purchases; collect fees for fingerprinting, records requests, and CPL's; Receive, prepare, enter, recall, or cancel Renton Municipal Court warrants. Monitor closed circuit security system and the City alarm system, giving proper emergency notification. Operate police radio console, computer fax machine, calculator, copier, shredder, cellular phone, microfilm monitor, multi-line telephone system, document scanner, and other office equipment as required. Remain current with relevant technological advancements as it relates to field. Maintain regular, reliable, and punctual attendance; work evenings, weekends, and/or holidays as required (overtime eligibility pursuant to collective bargaining agreement); ability to travel as required. Standard Functions: Accept and process evidence and found property; photograph same-sex crime victims as required. Coordinate and supervise work for volunteers and cadets. EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school and one year of clerical experience, involving extensive contact with the general public. Orthodontia coverage is also provided. Deferred Compensation Program The City contributes 3% of the employee's base wage rate into a deferred compensation retirement plan. An additional 3% premium is provided for passing a physical fitness exam. Employees may also set aside a percentage of their earnings on a tax-deferred basis. Retirement Plan Employees are enrolled in the State of Washington Department of Retirement Systems Plan (PERS) or the Public Safety Employees' Retirement System (PSERS). Life Insurance A group term life insurance policy is provided at no cost to each employee at a value equivalent to the annual salary. Each eligible dependent is also provided with a $1,000 policy. Long Term Disability Protection Employees are provided with a long term disability policy up to the equivalent of 60% of their salary. Flexible Benefits The City offers employees the opportunity to open two separate tax-free accounts through salary reduction. One account is to pay for expenses not covered by health insurance and the other account is for child care costs. Personal Leave Employees accrue paid personal leave time (a combination of holiday and vacation) beginning with the first day of employment in accordance with the following schedule whenever he/she is on paid status: 16 hours per month (0-5 years), 20 hours per month (6-10 years), 22 hours per month (11-15 years), 24 hours per month (16-20 years), 26 hours per month (21 years or more). Maximum accumulation of personal leave time shall not exceed 536 hours, except when the employee is unable to use personal leave time as a result of illness, disability or operation or considerations beyond the employee's control. Sick Leave Upon employment, the employee receives a sick leave bank of 24 hours, with an additional 24 hours awarded after three months. Thereafter, sick leave accrues at the rate of four hours each pay period.
