    1279 COMMUNITY SERVICES INTERN (PART-TIME) Salary $0.00 Hourly Location CA 90755, CA Job Type Internship Department Community Services Job Number 2018-0022 * Description * Benefits * Questions Position Description Under general supervision, assists, participates in, and performs various administrative and basic analytical duties for various City departments; prepares and maintains a variety of documents; and performs a variety of administrative and clerical duties relative to assigned area of responsibility. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS The intern incumbent assists, participates in, and performs various programming duties for the Community Services Department; prepares a variety of documents; and works closely with one or more Recreation Coordinators to carry out the Recreation and Community Services Divisions programs and activities. The objective of the City of Signal Hill's internship program is to provide a meaningful training ground for individuals to gain work experience and to increase their ability to compete in the workforce in entry-level positions. This is an unpaid and at-will internship open to students enrolled in an accredited college or university program to obtain an Associate's Degree, Bachelor's Degree or higher degree in Public or Business Administration, or applicable field related to the position. The selected applicant must show proof of receipt of academic credit for participation in the internship program. Example of Duties The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the class. * Assist staff in preparing special events including organizing materials for various events, operations and logistics at special events, and post-event evaluation. * Assist staff in leading off-site activities, contract classes, and special events. * Assist staff in planning and organizing developmentally appropriate activities for Grades K-8 in the after-school and day camp program. * Assist staff in program development for youth and adult activities including researching student management solutions for behavior issues. * Gain experience in budgeting and marketing. * Utilize various computer applications and software programs. * Conduct and participate in a variety of department studies and special projects including operational and procedural studies, service demand studies, and capacity studies. * Operate a variety of office equipment including copiers, scanners, facsimile machine, and computer. * Perform related duties as required. Minimum Qualifications Must be currently enrolled in an accredited college or university program to obtain an Associate Degree, Bachelor's Degree or higher in Recreation Management, or applicable field related to the position. Skills, Knowledge and Abilities The following generally describes the knowledge and ability required to enter the job and/or be learned within a short period of time in order to successfully perform the assigned duties. Knowledge of: Principles, practices and methods of administrative and organizational analysis; public administration policies and procedures. Office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and applicable software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, and databases Effective business communications and correct English usage, including spelling, grammar and punctuation Research techniques, methods, and procedures and report presentation; internet web site practices, methods and techniques; basic principles and practices of report preparation. Pertinent federal, state, and local codes, laws, and regulations. Ability to: Provide responsible administrative and basic analytical support to assigned area. Learn operations, services, and activities within the area of assignment; participate in various administrative support functions. Formulate hypotheses and develop conclusions and prepare reports. Operate office equipment including computers and supporting word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications; learn and effectively utilize various software applications. Utilize good judgment in analyzing situations carefully and adopting effective courses of action; gather, organize, compile, and summarize data. Understand and follow oral and written directions; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Licenses/Certificates/Special Requirements: A valid Class C California Driver's License and the ability to maintain insurability under the City's Vehicle Insurance Policy. Education/Training/Experience: Applicant must be currently enrolled in an accredited college or university program to obtain an Associate's Degree, Bachelor's Degree or higher degree in Public or Business Administration, or applicable field related to the position.
