The Planning Division Intern will be directly immersed and involved with day to day planning activities at a municipal level. There will be varied exposure to office, field and interagency facets of planning. The intern will work directly with the Planning Division team. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be: * Current enrollment as a college/university sophomore, junior, senior, or graduate student in an urban and regional planning program * Students that have completed courses related to urban and regional planning Work hours: 10-20 hours per week, flexible schedule but within City Hall busniess hours. The hours may be between Monday-Thursday 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Knowledge of: Windows based operating system, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, and/or ArcGIS. The ideal candidate will have the following skills: * Excellent oral and written communications skills; * Should be personable, motivated and a self-starter capable of working both individually and as part of a team; * Professional attitude, tact and courtesy necessary to deal with internal and external customers; * Attention to detail, good organization skills, and outstanding work ethic ESSENTIAL DUTIES: The objective of this internship is to provide meaningful training for an individual to feel confident about the work experience gained and to increase their ability to compete in the workforce in entry-level positions. The Planning Division Intern duties may include, but not limited to the following: * Learn the City's development application review process * Learn to review applications for completeness * Learn to read and explain City ordinances * Learn to read and interpret zoning codes * Gain familiarity with site, topographic, landscape, and architectural plans * Answer questions and provide information to the public * Research information and assist higher level planning staff with inquiries pertaining to current or comprehensive planning * Prepare agendas and reports for review boards and meetings * Provide required information for specific meetings * Assist in the preparation and review of meeting minutes * Provide technical support to planning staff by conducting research and preparing maps and graphics * Under the supervision of higher level planning staff, review and process administrative permits * Perform special projects, as assigned SELECTION PROCESS: Screening of qualifications and "most qualified" is based on the information provided on the official City Application.
