  • Responsibilities

    Job Description

    Under the direction of the Deputy Director of Communications and Public Affairs, this position is responsible for coordinating and managing the department's outreach and relationship with media organizations, and producing various community and media events. The essential duties include:

    1. Produces community and media events (e.g., volunteer-focused projects, groundbreakings, park openings);

    2. Produces publications including public service announcements, press releases, media advisories, op-eds and more to promote and publicize community and media events (e.g., volunteer-focused projects, groundbreakings, park openings);

    3. Participates in fund development activities for program/department, such as organizing events and development of partnerships with other organizations;

    4. Develops, produces, edits and distributes department newsletters and publications, web copy and other messaging; Assists with updating information on department websites; Monitors media written about the department or its employees to distribute in a daily news clipping and digest;

    5. Communicates directly with media, conducting interviews, cultivating relationships with reporters, editors and producers, and pitching stories related to community and media events (e.g., volunteer-focused projects, groundbreakings, park openings);

    6. Responds to day-to-day public inquiries related to various departmental functions including community events (e.g., volunteer-focused projects, groundbreakings, park openings);

    7. Establishes and maintains contacts and relationships with schools, community and corporate groups, other City departments, community leaders, and representatives of outside agencies and the media;

    8. Coordinates with internal divisions (e.g., Capital and Planning, Property Management, Partnerships, Operations) to develop appropriate messaging for public audiences; and

    9. Performs other duties as required.

  • Qualifications

    Qualifications

    1. Possession of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university; AND

    2. One year (2000 hours) of experience supervising, coordinating or directing volunteer services and/or community outreach services in an organization which provides services to the public.

    Substitution: Additional experience supervising, coordinating or directing volunteer and/or community relations services, as described above, may be substituted for up to two years of the required baccalaureate degree on a year-for-year basis.

    Special Condition Six (6) months of verifiable experience producing public information content and creating/reviewing press releases and media advisory formats. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

    The stated desirable qualifications may be used to identify job finalists at the end of the selection process when candidates are referred for hiring.

    • Five (5) years of experience organizing media events.
    • Five (5) years of experience editing for both content and clarity.
    • Five (5) years of experience storytelling through writing, podcasting or film.
    • Three (3) years of experience writing/reviewing press releases, media advisories, op-eds, statements.
    • Ability (strong) to strategize on dynamic public affairs issues.
    • Ability (strong) to work under tight deadlines.
    • Ability (strong) to disseminate complex issues and topics neccessary to communicate with general public.

    COMPENSATION: $37.90 - $46.08/hour; $6,569.00 - $7,986.00/month; $78,832.00 - $95,836.00/year APPLICATION OPENING: October 22, 2021 APPLICATION DEADLINE: November 4, 2021

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATION SUPPLEMENTAL QUESTIONNAIRE (WEIGHT: QUALIFYING): Applicants will be required to complete a Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire that will be emailed following the application deadline. Applicants will be required to respond to the MQSQ in the time frame indicated, and submit their answers as directed. 

    SUPPLEMENTAL QUESTIONNAIRE: WEIGHT: 100%  Qualified candidates will be sent a supplemental questionnaire exam that must be completed by the set date. Candidates will be evaluated on their relative knowledge, skill and ability levels in job-related areas. A passing score must be achieved on the Supplemental Questionnaire in order to be placed/ranked on the Eligible List. Candidate responses on the Supplemental Questionnaire cannot be changed once submitted. Candidates will be placed in rank order according to their final score on the Supplemental Questionnaire.  

    ELIGIBLE LIST/SCORE REPORT:  A confidential eligible list of applicant names that have passed the civil service examination process will be created, and used for certification purposes only. An examination score report will be established, so applicants can view the ranks, final scores and number of eligible candidates. Applicant information, including names of applicants on the eligible list, shall not be made public unless required by law. However, an eligible list shall be made available for public inspection, upon request, once the eligible list is exhausted or expired and referrals resolved. The eligible list/score report resulting from this civil service examination process is subject to change after adoption (e.g., as a result of appeals), as directed by the Human Resources Director or the Civil Service Commission. 

    ELIGIBLE LIST DURATION: The duration of the eligible list resulting from this examination process will be of six (6) months, and may be extended with the approval of the Human Resources Director.

    CERTIFICATION RULE: The certification rule for the eligible list resulting from this examination will be Rule of 3 scores. Additional selection processes may be conducted by the hiring department prior to making final hiring decisions.

    Upon approval of the Human Resource Director (see Civil Service Rule 111A.26.5), the eligible list/score report resulting from this announcement may be used by other departments that also use this classification or a similar classification.
