    Job Description

    As the 9922 Transportation Outreach Associate, you’ll support the City’s sustainability goals by working on a variety of initiatives designed to get people out of single-occupancy vehicles and into sustainable, low-carbon modes of transportation like walking, biking, and public transit. You will also assist in administering, developing, and conducting outreach campaigns in support of transportation benefits programs. You can expect to work collaboratively with colleagues, partners and stakeholders that include City departments, San Francisco businesses, and residents—so you’re someone who values working in a collaborative setting with an expectation of innovation, inclusivity, and impact.

    The 9922 Transportation Outreach Associate is an entry-level role designed to offer exposure to a career pathway in environmental outreach and communications. Through work duties, mentorship, and professional development opportunities, you’ll build foundational experience in community-based social marketing, public outreach, program administration, project management, and customer support while meeting designated position objectives. Knowledge and experience gained will position you for success as an environmental communications and outreach professional equipped to serve San Franciscans and beyond—plus career advancement opportunities in related fields.

    WHAT YOU'LL LIKELY DO

    • Support marketing, administration, and customer service for the City and County of San Francisco’s Commuter Benefits Program, comprising a range of sustainable transportation services and resources for City employees
    • Facilitate virtual and in-person outreach that includes staffing special events, event tabling, and presenting on transportation benefits and low-carbon transportation options
    • Support behavior-change and marketing projects from conception to completion
    • Develop project reports and present findings to relevant stakeholders, as assigned
    • Develop and/or coordinate communications via multimedia platforms, including email, websites, newsletters, print media, and social media
    • Monitor and respond to all transportation-related customer inquiries via phone, email, and department website(s)
    • Evaluate the expressed and implied needs of target audiences, track and share relevant learnings, and determine solutions to address audience concerns
    • Provide customer support and technical assistance to businesses and other stakeholders regarding San Francisco’s Commuter Benefits Ordinance and Tenant Bicycle Parking in Existing Commercial Buildings Ordinance
    • Perform other duties related to those described above, including supporting related environmental program areas, as assigned

    MENTORS AND SUPERVISORS - During the period of employment, you will serve as an active member of the Communications & Community Engagement team at SF Environment, attending regular team meetings and scheduled outreach activities. The successful candidate will be assigned a mentor and supervisor to guide and train them. In some cases, the mentor and supervisor may be the same person. Mentors and supervisors work closely together to provide employees with comprehensive, quality training and a rich experience in the fields of environmental outreach and behavior change.

    EXEMPT EMPLOYMENT STATUS - This position is a Permanent-Exempt Appointment, with an anticipated duration of 24 months. The position is excluded by the Charter from the competitive civil service examination process and shall serve at the discretion of the appointing officer.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    • Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university

    Substitution: Verifiable professional work experience performing duties equivalent to those of City and County of San Francisco Class 9922 Environmental Associate may be substituted for the required degree on a year-for-year basis (up to a maximum of two years). One year (2000 hours) of additional qualifying experience will be considered equivalent to 30 semester units/45 quarter units.

    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

    1. Interest in learning more about equity, inclusion, and diversity concepts and applying them in the environmental field
    2. Customer service, sales, and/or outreach experience, with the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in written format
    3. Analytical skills in areas such as logical reasoning, critical thinking, research, and data analysis
    4. Proven ability to work independently and in a collaborative team
    5. Word processing, spreadsheets, database, and internet proficiency
    6. Desire and ability to take on project leadership roles with supervisor oversight

    Additional Information

    Salary - $51,532 per year

    Work Location - SF Environment is currently working fully remote until November 1st, at which point we will transition to a hybrid work schedule, with staff working remote up to three days a week and onsite for the remaining days per week.
