    Job Description

    The San Francisco Planning Department is seeking a Data Analyst Intern to support the expansion and user-friendliness of the Department’s publicly available datasets.  As one of the first cities in the United States to establish an Open Data Policy, the City and County of San Francisco aims to 1) enhance government transparency and accountability; 2) develop new analyses or applications based on the unique data the City provides; 3) mobilize the high-tech workforce to use City data to create useful civic tools at no cost to the City; and 4) create social and economic benefits based on innovation in how residents interact with government stemming from increased accessibility to City datasets.  Under the direction of the Data & Analytics Manager, the Data Analyst Intern will work with stakeholders to update the Department’s data inventory and enhance data governance protocols in key areas including housing production, racial and social equity, COVID-19 recovery, permitting, urban design, land use, transportation, climate and resilience planning, and process improvements.  A successful candidate will have a passion for clean, structured data, be an entrepreneurial systems thinker, and be an engaging data storyteller who can connect the dots between disparate data and derive actionable insights to support organizational goals

    Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

    • Conduct outreach across all Planning Divisions on the most frequently asked for information/data. 
    • Inventory the Department’s publicly available data and data products across multiple online channels including DataSF, ArcGIS Online, sfplanning.org, sfplanninggis.org, and others.   
    • Conduct research on how global cities make their data more accessible, user friendly, and interactive. 
    • Participate in interagency meetings regarding citywide data standards and data governance protocols as directed by the City’s Chief Data Officer and pursuant to the City’s Open Data Policy. 
    • Assist with the development of policy data strategies and technical implementation plans, including metadata management and working with data owners to develop data definitions, dataset descriptions, and methodologies.  
    • Curate Planning's datasets and data products into broad themes for ease of search and navigation. 
    • Work with data owners to decommission or archive unmaintained datasets. 
    • Find opportunities to publish new datasets and data products. 
    • Prepare data visualizations and present findings and actionable recommendations to stakeholders.

     

    Key Deliverables: 

    • An updated data inventory of the Department’s datasets and data products including dashboards and webmaps. 
    • The development and publication of key datasets on the City’s open data portal, DataSF, to support the Department’s most frequently asked for information and data. 
    • Presentations, both written and verbal, on research findings on global urban planning data initiatives and recommendations for how to make the Department’s data more accessible, user friendly, and interactive. 
    • The creation of templates, checklists, dashboards, or other supportive tools to improve the Department’s ongoing data governance efforts.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Requires completion of two years (equivalent to 60 semester units or 90 quarter units) of education from an accredited college or university leading to a Bachelor’s Degree in Planning, Architecture, Urban Studies, or a related field specific to the internship.

    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

    • Candidates working towards or possessing an undergraduate or graduate degree in Data Science, GIS, public policy, political science, urban planning, journalism, social science or related field with a strong emphasis on data analysis, data visualization, and data storytelling. A combination of education and/or training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of this position will also be considered. 
    • Preference will be given to candidates who have a strong background in data management, working with complex datasets, and developing informative, user-friendly visualizations and dashboards using user-centered design principles. 
    • Experience working with open datasets a plus. 
    • Excellent organizational and communication skills. 
    • Experience in successfully collaborating within a cross-functional team. 
    • Entrepreneurial, with a proven ability to execute on multiple tasks simultaneously. 
    • Flexible as the needs and demands of the team evolve.
