    Job Description

    ABOUT THE TEAM: The Department of Technology’s Public Safety division operates and maintains several critical systems such as 911 Radio, Fiber, Emergency Alert, crime prevention camera, burglar alarm, fire alarm call box and other similar systems.

    ABOUT THE POSITION: The Student Intern Program is designed to attract, develop, groom and retain innovative Public Safety Technology professionals in local government. Interns are expected to work and gain experience in various public safety technologies like radio systems, electronic alarm systems, video systems, IT network and application systems, fiber systems, fire alarm call boxes, Wi-Fi, microwave, Public Safety administrative support etc.

    Working under the direction of executive and supervisory management, each intern will gain hands-on experience related to all technical and administrative aspects of public safety technology operations and services. Position duties include assisting with the planning, design (architecture and engineering), installation, implementation and support of the systems and infrastructure described above. This includes detailed expertise and due diligence on specific areas of public safety system architectures and designs, technology trends and best practices, and fiber infrastructure design and installation. Assisting with radio installation, repair and trouble shooting. Assisting with fire and burglar alarm installation, repair, and trouble shooting. Assisting with video and surveillance system installation, repair, and trouble shooting. Assisting with network, switch and router maintenance and trouble shooting. Assisting with Outdoor Warning System and PA system maintenance and trouble shooting. Assisting with fiber and cable installation and trouble shooting. Synthesize and analyze information, produce reports and returns, formulate options and recommendations. Organize and present recommendations. Develop and present alternative action plans. Investigate new technologies, electronic practices and determine their potential usefulness. Tracking projects, running reports and returns.

     

    POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Assist in locating fiber facilities
    • Assist in permit plotting using AutoCAD
    • Assist in network plotting using AutoCAD and the ArcGIS database
    • Assist in construction site surveying
    • Assist with reviewing construction documents
    • Assist with fiber data entry
    • Assist in radio installation, repair and trouble shooting
    • Assist in fire and burglar alarm installation, repair, and trouble shooting
    • Assist in video and surveillance system installation, repair, and trouble shooting
    • Assist in network, switch and router maintenance and trouble shooting
    • Assist in Outdoor warning and PA system maintenance and trouble shooting
    • Assist in fiber and cable installation and trouble shooting
    • Investigate new technologies, public safety practices and determine their potential usefulness.
    • Documentation, project tracking, time sheet entry etc.

     

    JOB TYPE: The Temporary- Exempt Full Time position is excluded by the Charter from the competitive civil service examination process and shall serve at the discretion of the appointing officer. The anticipated duration of this project position is thirty-six (36) months and will not result in an eligible list or permanent civil service hiring. This position has an anticipated duration of up to three (3) years.

    NATURE OF WORK: Incumbent must be willing to work up to 40 hours per week, rotating schedule as determined by the department. Travel within San Francisco may be required.

    WORK LOCATION: Incumbent will conduct the majority of work at the Department of Technology, 200 Paul Ave./ Public Safety Division. However, there may be situations where the incumbent will be required to work at other sites throughout the City of San Francisco as necessary.

    Qualifications

    Completion of one year of Electronics, Science (Physics, Chemistry or Mathematics), Architecture, Computer Science OR Engineering study in an accredited College. At the time of filing, the applicant must be attending an accredited degree program. 

    In order for the applicant to be employed, the applicant must be returning to their undergraduate program or entering into a graduate program. 

    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATION:

    Work experience in the field of Electronics, Telecommunication, Radio, Computer Science or Auto CAD or any Public Safety Technology Services is preferred.

    NOTE:

    1. MEDICAL TESTING: Prior to appointment, eligible candidates must successfully pass the TB testing process.

    2. SECURITY CLEARANCES AND BACKGROUND INVESTIGATIONS: Positions in this classification may require that successful candidates who become eligible for appointment may be required to go through a background investigation to determine the candidate’s suitability for employment in this classification. Factors considered in the investigation may include employment history, use of illegal/controlled substances. Reasons for rejection based on this investigation may include, but not limited to: applicable convictions, repeated or serious violations of the law, inability to accept supervision, inability to follow rules and regulations, falsification of application materials and/or other relevant factors. Failure to obtain and maintain security clearance may be basis for termination.

    COMPENSATION:  $35.4000 hourly
