    Job Description

    The successful candidate should have expertise in projects of all sizes to assume project design responsibility for planning, development and execution of planning & design documentation which may include interpreting, organizing and coordinating project team assignments while continuously striving to improve the overall standards of design quality. The primary role of this position will be to oversee and implement the design standards and programs for the Building, Design & Construction Division for the Bureau of Architecture (BOA), primarily in the Healthcare Section and possibly in other sections.

    The Design Architect will be responsible for BOA project delivery excellence and should have a sophisticated understanding of the relationship between architectural design and building technology, with a commitment to continually raise the bar of design excellence within the organization while motivating and mentoring our staff to do the same.

    Under the direction of the Senior Architect (5211), the Design Architect (5268) performs difficult and responsible professional architectural work in connection with the design, construction, maintenance and conversion of public buildings; plans, assigns and directs the activities of assigned personnel engaged in such work; and performs related duties as required. In conjunction with managing and performing the design and technical aspects of projects summarized above, the Project Architect provides comprehensive project planning and coordination services, including maintaining client relationships, support of contract negotiation and administration, public and user group presentations, and maintenance of budgets and schedules for the assigned projects. The Architect also participates in the professional development of associate staff.

    Additional duties may include but are not limited to:

    • Preparing and conducting presentations to Clients, Public interest groups, and Commissions.
    • Supervising and participating in the preparation of complex and difficult conceptual, schematic and detailed design.
    • Participating in the preparation of Proposals for Services and agreements with Clients.
    • Working with the office Senior Architect & Design Manager, with the in-house Design Committee and Core Design Staff, and contributing to the standards for in-house design critiques for all projects.
    • Planning, distributing, and coordinating work by staff; coordinates the work of multiple design and engineering disciplines, checks drawings and specifications prepared by staff, consulting Architects and Engineers for conformance with design intent, project program criteria, and codes.
    • Maintains a successful relationship and interfaces regularly with the Civic Design Review Board, participating in monthly informal and formal design reviews of all projects.
  • Qualifications

    Qualifications

    • Eight (8) years of progressively responsible experience in the architectural field, including architectural design, architectural detailing, construction documents, programming, preliminary cost budgeting, specification coordination and review, and construction administration. This experience must include four (4) years serving as a job captain or project leader, and two (2) years of verifiable experience as a licensed architect in the State of California. (Experience in lower-level classes (i.e., 5260, 5261, 5265, or 5266) is considered qualifying.)
    • Possession of a license to practice architecture in the State of California issued by the California State Board of Architectural Examiners.

    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

    • 12+ years of relevant architecture and design experience, with a strong background designing multiple building typologies of varying scale. Experience in Healthcare and/or OSHPD projects a plus.
    • Advanced degree in Architecture or Design preferred, with a rigorous design education
    • Proficiency in Revit, ACAD, Photoshop, and Sketch-Up
    • Ability to maintain excellent Client relationships and should be prepared to provide at least (3) Client references obtained within the last 5-7 years.
    • Ability to generate multi-media perspective sketches a plus
    • Ability to maintain a successful relationship and interface regularly with the Civic Design Review Board, participating in monthly informal and formal design reviews of all projects.
    • Ability to communicate design concepts verbally and graphically to client and staff
    • Ability to develop collaborative relationships across the firm, with clients, and with other key constituents
    • Experience with design and delivery of large-scale, programmatically complex projects.
    • Experience in the field of Healthcare and/or OSHPD projects a plus.
    • Experience working as a collaborator and leader within a multi-disciplinary team environment teaching and inspiring others to strive for continued design excellence.
    • Proven track record in delivering projects at all scales and leading multiple project teams with a high standard of design excellence.
    • Proven track record of developing forward-looking and innovative approaches to architecture.
    • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
    • Excellent presentation skills.
