    Job Description

    As a translation project manager, you will manage human translations on SF.gov and for digital services throughout City government. You will manage the entire process and workflow, from communication with City departments and external vendors to QA and publishing. You will work closely with our bilingual content designers, SF.gov product team and stakeholders across the City to refine our processes.

    You will also work with a multidisciplinary team to set priorities and establish translation governance as we scale. This work will include:

    • Gathering information on what the translations system needs to do for a variety of stakeholders
    • Analyzing how the translations systems are meeting those needs
    • Analyzing data to improve the translation system
    • Working with stakeholders and the product team to improve the system

    We are looking for someone with strong project management skills to help shape how we deliver inclusive services to San Franciscans with limited English proficiency (LEP). Looking beyond how we meet the City’s language access requirements, you’ll be involved in improving both the process and the product. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    • Ensure quality, consistency, and speed of translations
    • Work closely with vendors to manage translation workflow
    • Review and publish translations across several platforms
    • Analyze our current translations process, prioritize and test out improvements, gather data on how those improvements are working and iterate again
    • Test and approve software updates for launch, reporting bugs and issues
    • Troubleshoot translations system problems and implement solutions
    • Provide technical support for translation and localization systems
    • Produce reports on localization quality and speed
    • Create and maintain translation glossaries and style guides in all target languages
    • Report bugs, document processes, and test translation functionality in Drupal
    • Support bilingual research efforts by coordinating with vendors and the research team on project timelines and estimates
    • Identify best practices and opportunities to embed language access in our services
    • Review monthly invoices against jobs sent to translations vendors, tracking spend
    • Help identify, onboard, and manage new translation vendors, including active participation in the procurement process
  • Qualifications

    Qualifications

    1.  An associate degree in computer science, digital analytics, project management, digital localization or a closely related field from an accredited college or university OR its equivalent in terms of total course credits/units; AND

    2.  Three (3) years of professional experience in computer science, digital localization or digital project management.

    Substitution:  Additional experience as described above may be substituted for the required degree on a year-for-year basis (up to a maximum of two (2) years). One (1) year is equivalent to thirty (30) semester units / forty-five (45) quarter units with a minimum of 10 semester / 15 quarter units in computer science or a closely related field. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

    Translation and Localization

    • Experience in working with translation and localization service providers
    • Understanding translation and localization industry standards and translation management processes
    • Proficiency in one or more of the following languages: Filipino, Spanish, and Chinese (Mandarin and/or Cantonese)
    • Direct experience working as a linguist, interpreter, or a language service provider

    Project Management

    • Expertise creating, documenting and iterating on complex processes
    • Experience organizing and delivering complex projects with multiple stakeholders on time and on budget
    • Strong attention to detail, deadlines and budgets

    Working Practices

    • Inclusive focus, with experience delivering services to under-represented communities
    • Comfortable in a fast-paced, evolving environment
    • Can help the team prioritize delivery and rapid iteration over perfection
    • Unafraid to take risks, willing to learn from mistakes, and appreciates the importance of iteration for incremental improvements

    Technical Skills

    • Experience with translations management software and localization and translations services
    • Familiarity with Content Management Systems like Drupal, Contentful, Sitecore or others
    • Knowledge of machine translation and machine translation post-editing(MTPE)
    • Comfortable working with productivity tools like Slack, Airtable, Trello, Confluence and Jira
    • Experience analyzing requirements, systems and procedures to enhance existing systems
    • Ability to systematically test software before launch, reporting bugs and work helping to prioritize issues
    • Experience with database management systems like AirTable, Coda or Quick Base
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google suite, database management systems

    COMPENSATION:  $117,598 - $147,966 annually
