    Job Description

    Under general supervision, the General Laborer performs a variety of manual labor tasks. Essential functions include: general cleaning, including removing debris from construction, maintenance, wrecking or repair work; loading and unloading materials, supplies, furniture, and equipment; operating various types of equipment and machinery including pneumatic and/or hand tools, and work safely around construction equipment; mixing and assisting in the application of concrete and asphalt to repair roads and sidewalks; excavating trenches, saw cutting, core drilling and compacting excavations; cleaning culverts, catch basins, and sewers; stabilizing embankments; clearing obstacles prior to machine mowing; clearing and chipping vegetation, brush, and limbs with chainsaws and weed whackers; clearing fi rebreaks, watershed roadways, v-ditches, jogging and foot paths, and pipeline rights of way; assisting other trades; installing and maintaining various types of fences; serving as flag operator and setting up traffic barricades and lights or other barriers around work sites (on streets or in other locations); sweeping streets and sidewalks; assisting or applying disinfectants, de-greasers, and/or herbicides to streets and sidewalks; scrubbing streets, sidewalks, and plazas with a broom or high-pressure water hose; cleaning up illegal dump sites, spills on city streets and sites of accidents; picking up litter and putting debris into bags; removing signs and litter from poles and benches; operating motorized sidewalk sweepers; removing graffiti; assisting in the removal of homeless encampments; completing daily work or field reports and other reports; communicating using radio or other communication system; driving a car or truck to worksites and following route or other maps; and assisting craft workers. Performs other related duties as required. NATURE OF THE WORK: requires the ability to lift objects weighing up to 90 pounds and carry them 50 feet and to balance 10-foot pieces of lumber; requires sustained physical effort, frequently under adverse weather conditions and/or disagreeable working conditions, such as working in streets or roads in traffic or in cold or rain or being exposed to feces and urine, raw sewage, used syringes, toxic and hazardous materials, poison oak, poisonous snakes, and insects; confined space entry; working on and/or operating a small boat; may require working weekend shifts, nights and emergency overtime.

    APPOINTMENT TYPE: TEMPORARY EXEMPT AS-NEEDED, LIMITED TO 1040 WORK HOURS PER FISCAL YEAR. 

  • Qualifications

    Qualifications

    EXPERIENCE: Three (3) years (6000 hours) of journey-level experience as a general laborer in the construction field. LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION: Possession of a valid Class C California driver license (must be maintained during employment). SUBSTITUTION: Completion of a California Division of Apprenticeship Standards (DAS) or United States Department of Labor (DOL) approved apprentice construction laborer program may be substituted for the required experience.
