    Job Description

    Under general supervision, as a Plumber, you will perform skilled plumbing work in the alteration, repair, and maintenance of water, sewer, and other plumbing systems.

    Important and Essential Duties:
    Your duties as a Plumber may include, but are not limited to the following:

    • Perform plumbing duties in connection with a wide variety of building alterations, maintenance and repair projects, and other structures.
    • Install alter, replace, and repair plumbing, such as water, sewage, and drainage systems.
    • Cutting, bending, assembling, and installing various pipes, fittings, and fixtures for water, sanitary, drainage, heating, gas, and other plumbing systems which involve the performance of hand, bench, and maintenance plumbing tasks.
    • Installing, altering, repairing, or replacing all plumbing fixtures.
    • Threading, reaming, assembling, caulking, soldering, and welding various pipes and component parts.
    • Installing, altering, and repairing valves, fittings, and other plumbing parts and equipment, including hot water boilers, sterilizers, steam tables, sinks, thermal control apparatus, sprinkler heads, hydrants, and service pipes.
    • Repairing and installing new water and drainage lines and waste and sewage pipes.
    • Check plumbing fixtures for leaks and other defects.
    • Opening and cleaning clogged drains, pipes, and traps.
    • Advising on the selection, ordering and storing of plumbing supplies and equipment.
    • Maintaining work records and reports.

    Working Conditions:
    The nature of the work may require working in a confined space, jail or hospital facility and standby for rotating on-call work.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    Education:
    Completion of the recognized Apprenticeship of the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipefitting Industry of the United States and Canada City and County of San Francisco General Plumber Apprenticeship program in class 7465/7466.

    License and Certification:
    Possession of a valid California driver’s license.

    Substitution:
    Completion of a recognized five (5) year plumber’s apprenticeship program and three (3) years of journey-level experience as a journeyman plumber may be substituted for the completion of the City and County of San Francisco General Plumber Apprenticeship.

    Additional qualifying journey level experience may be substituted for the required plumbing apprenticeship on a year-for-year basis.

    CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT
    Valid Driver’s License: Applicants must possess a valid State of California driver’s license with no restrictions that would prohibit them from legally performing the essential functions and duties of the role.

    The selection process will include an evaluation of applications in relation to minimum requirements. Depending on the number of applicants, the department may establish and implement additional screening mechanisms to comparatively evaluate the qualifications of candidates. If this becomes necessary, only those applicants whose qualifications most closely meet the needs of the department will move forward in the recruitment process.

    Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire (MQSQ):
    Candidates may be required to complete an MQSQ as part of the employment application. This MQSQ is designed to obtain specific information regarding an applicant's experience in relation to the Minimum Qualifications (MQ) for this position. The MQSQ will be used to evaluate if the applicant possesses the required minimum qualifications.
