    Job Description

    Reporting directly to the MOHCD Director, the Communications Manager manages internal and external communications to help amplify public awareness of the City’s efforts and to better connect residents to affordable housing opportunities and related services.  The role is responsible for strategic communication planning and execution of media/public relations, digital communications, events, and brand/reputation management. Core duties include:

    • Serve as point person for the Mayor’s Office of Communications for affordable housing and community development media/PR efforts, including press event coordination, briefing documents, talking points, and press releases.
    • Coordinate MOHCD-related press events with key internal and external stakeholders (e.g., other city departments, developers, community organizations).
    • Manage all MOHCD media inquiries and responses, including drafting responses, coordinating approvals, and serving as spokesperson.
    • Track and disseminate media coverage to MOHCD leadership.
    • Create and maintain MOHCD brand guidelines, templates, and collateral.
    • Develop a public awareness campaign for DAHLIA SF Housing Portal: https://housing.sfgov.org/
    • Create and maintain internal communication channels to keep employees informed and encourage knowledge sharing (e.g., weekly emails).
    • Develop and maintain external communication channels to elevate the voice of residents, such as client testimonial videos: https://sfmohcd.org/testimonials
    • Manage MOHCD’s online presence, including websites (sfmohcd.org + sf.gov/mohcd) and social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter)
    • Collaborate with MOHCD’s data team to create strategies for summarizing and communicating MOHCD’s impact.
    • Serve as a member of MOHCD’s management team and advise on strategic communications planning and tactics.
    • Coordinate with other city department communications directors and participate in monthly citywide strategic communications meetings.
    • Serve as a member of Non-Profit Housing Association of Northern California (NPH) Strategic Communications Council to provide city perspective on regional communication efforts.
  • Qualifications

    Qualifications

    Minimum Qualifications:  

    • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, English and Marketing or relevant field. 
    • A minimum of 3 years’ experience in a similar role.
    • Proven experience creating targeted content is advantageous.
    • Strong knowledge of communication practices and techniques.

    • Skilled at knowing what and when to escalate or ask for help
    • Calm and effective in an environment which is often fast-paced and unpredictable
    • Excellent writing and proofreading skills
    • Expert at Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook
    • Experience at event planning 
    • Social media savvy
